The Hawaii Computer-Human Interaction Lab (HICHI) (http://manoa.hawaii.edu/hichi/) in the Information and Computer Sciences Department at the University of Hawaii is looking for a post-doctoral researcher to conduct research on a multi-year, NSF-funded project studying how social networking and new media are used to make voting decisions and support civic participation, and to help develop and evaluate new Web 2.0 tools in this area.

Title: Junior Researcher

Location: University of Hawaii, Manoa (Honolulu, Hawaii)

Salary Information: US$ 50,004 minimum plus health benefits, Commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Full Time, 11-month, non-tenure, renewable

Other Conditions:

Federal funds, renewal dependent upon performance and availability of funds.


Duties and Responsibilities:

Plan and conduct research in the area of social networks, new media technology, and political decision making and action. Help manage a multidisciplinary team doing usability studies, field studies, and user-centered development. Participate in iterative design and development of Web 2.0 and new media tools for civic participation. Conduct independent research and participate in conferences and journals in the areas of human-computer interaction, computer-supported collaborative work, e-Government and e-Participation, and related areas.


Qualifications:

-Ph.D. (or soon-to-be Ph.D.) in Computer Science, Information Science, HCI, Cognitive Science or related field.

-Experience studying human uses of information technology.

-Familiarity with human-computer interaction techniques for user-centered design, usability evaluation, and understanding technology use in context.

-Programming and database expertise sufficient for developing Web 2.0 and mobile applications.

-Demonstrated ability to plan, execute and describe research projects involving computing technologies and user experience data.

-Experience and enthusiasm for communicating research results at scientific conferences and in academic journals.

-Comfort working with a multidisciplinary team.

-Interest in the areas of social computing, new media, civic participation, and the use of ICTs in the areas of e-Government and e-Participation.


Desired Qualifications:

-Familiarity with text analysis, including sentiment analysis.

-Familiarity with visualization techniques for blog, Twitter, social network, and other new media content.

-Experience with ethnographic and longitudinal methods.
