WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION:

The 8th annual Human-Robot Interaction Pioneers Workshop will be held in Tokyo, Japan on Sunday, 3 March 2013. Exploring HRI in a small, informal and welcoming manner, HRI Pioneers is a premier venue for up-and-coming researchers and will take place in conjunction with the 2013 ACM/IEEE International Conference on Human-Robot Interaction (HRI 2013). This highly selective workshop is designed to bring together a cohort of the world's top student researchers. The HRI Pioneers Workshop fosters creativity, communication and inspiration surrounding important issues and open-challenges in the diverse field of human-robot interaction.

Occurring the day before the main conference, the format of the workshop will include: student presentations, group brainstorming activities, and a poster session. A keynote address and discussion panel will also take place with established senior researchers who will provide invaluable insights into the current and future developments and practice of HRI. The workshop is pleased to announce that Dr. Andrea Thomaz (Georgia Institute of Technology) will deliver the keynote lecture, and the discussion panel will consist of Dr. Vanessa Evers (University of Twente), Dr. Peter Kahn (University of Washington), Dr. Leila Takayama (Willow Garage), and Dr. Greg Trafton (Naval Research Laboratory); more to be announced.

Interested students, at any stage of their academic career, are encouraged to apply. Applications consist of 1) a two-page extended abstract describing one specific research project or one coherent body of research from the applicant's past, current or proposed work, 2) a curriculum vitae, and 3) a letter of support from the applicant's research supervisor. The application window will run from 1 November to 1 December 2012, and applications will be reviewed by the HRI Pioneers Organizing and Program Committees. The acceptance rate for last year's workshop was approximately 28%, and those selected will typically be granted financial support (travel and accommodation) to attend. Further details, including abstract samples and templates, are now available on the workshop website at http://www.hripioneers.info.

An overwhelming majority of past workshop attendees have gone on to phenomenal careers in academia, government, and industry. HRI Pioneers is a one-of-a-kind collaboration, professional development, and networking opportunity spanning both disciplinary and geographical boundaries. All interested students are encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity!
