Springer Journal BioNanoScience

Special Issue on "Personal Health Systems for Wellbeing and Lifestyle Change"
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
World Health Organization defines health as a “state of complex physical, mental and social wellbeing and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity”. Improvements in daily habits such as nutrition, exercise, sleep and awareness of emotional and social wellbeing can prevent the risk of experiencing serious diseases in long-term. Recent advances in miniaturized and wearable sensor technology, drastic increase in the smartphone usage and social networks and eventually convergence of them leads to the development of better context-aware applications that can capture and link various aspects of an individual’s life that was never possible before. The resulting applications have the potential of creating a great impact in health sector by providing personalized lifestyle recommendations that can accompany the users everywhere and anytime shifting the focus from treatment to prevention. People can be aware of their nutrition and exercise patterns as well as their mental health and they could be aided automatically by their mobile phones and other digital devices. Due to the interdisciplinary nature of the field, traditionally separated fields of scientific research such as sensor technology, human-computer interaction, medical and social sciences are converging. New research challenges in this area are the usability and acceptance of these sensors in daily life without hindering users’ movements in order to ensure wide public access.

The goal of this special issue is to advance our understanding of the research challenges in this field combining perspectives from the above mentioned scientific research areas and create a solid foundation with the aim of aiding other researchers and practitioners to explore new research directions.

The topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

  * Wearable sensors in daily life
  *   Smartphone sensing
  * Systems integrating sensors and social networks
  * Usability and adoption of sensor technology
  * Machine learning methods for interpreting sensor data
  * Systems monitoring exercise, diet and sleep habits
  * Systems monitoring emotional and social wellbeing
  * Systems recommending lifestyle change using sensors
