Material Interactions – From Atoms and Bits to Entangled Practices - Call for Papers
With the advent of smart materials, ubiquitous computing, computational composites, interactive architectures, the Internet of Things, and tangible bits, HCI has increasingly recognized the role that non-computational materials and even 'immaterial materials' play.
We're curating a theme issue of Springer's Personal and Ubiquitous Computing (PUC ) to explore 'the material turn' - where tangible interactions bridge the digital and physical by creating 'bits' that can be grasped, manipulated, accessed, and programmed.
In the issue we are going to explore a shift in perspective that challenges the distinction between application, use and context and reflects the tangled ways in which the computational is fundamentally woven together with the social.

We invite contributions that offer new and interesting approaches to describing, theorizing and designing with material interactions.
We are especially interested in contributions that are conceptually and theoretically challenging, but still supported by clear-cut design demonstrations or empirical findings. We seek contributions that can move the discussion on materiality forward - as a theoretical/analytical lens, as an alternative design paradigm, and as an emerging strand of research in HCI.
We especially welcome contributions that exemplify, in different domains and settings, how an attention to the material approach have been useful, practically and theoretically.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
Frameworks and theories for describing material interactions
Investigations of how materials relate to materialities
Empirical studies and critical perspectives on material interactions
Design principles to guide design from material integration to user experience
Design challenges for HCI and material interactions
Vocabularies needed to be developed to address material interactions
Demonstrations of how the concept of 'materiality' has been useful for recognizing the entanglement of discursive and material practices in design
Studies focused on how “attending to the material" can broadened conceptions of collaborative practice
Design research aimed at demonstrating and advancing the materials and materiality discourse in our field

Our aim is to put together a theme issue that can serve as a reference point for this emergent perspective, and we seek not only papers, but also novel contributions presented in interesting and unusual ways including:
transcripts of conversations and debates between researchers with divergent perspectives
book or article reviews taking critical positions
viewpoint papers on questions around digital materials
connected submissions discussing the same issue from a multitude of perspectives
Contributions should be submitted in as pdf to [log in to unmask] and accepted final versions need to follow the Springer format for journal publication. The review process will include a double-blind review process in which cross- reviewing also will be applied to stimulate cross-references being made across the submissions being accepted for this special issue.
