2nd CALL FOR PAPERS - Fun and Games 2012 Workshop

*Opportunities and Challenges when Designing and Developing Games
with/for Kids*
in conjunction with Fun and Games 2012

September 4th, 2012
Toulouse, France

http://workshops.icts.sbg.ac.at/fng2012
------------------------------------------------------------------------

TOPIC:
The development of games not only for but also with children is a very
challenging topic. The goal of this one-day workshop is to share
experiences, best practices, lessons learned and to explore the future
potentials on how to guide the involvement and participation of children
in the design and development process of games. The workshop will bring
together not only researchers from a wide spectrum of disciplines and
research communities (HCI, interaction and user interface design, game
development, educational sciences), who share a common interest in
understanding the opportunities and challenges to get children involved
in development or evaluation processes, but also game industry and
education.

PARTICIPATION:
Position papers are invited, but are not limited, on the following topics:
• Opportunities and challenges of the educational domain, considering
pedagogical constraints and potentials (intra and extra curricular
activities) for the design of games, especially of serious games;
• Benefits and methodological challenges to get children involved as
informants, designers and evaluators in an intergenerational design team
(e.g., as part of the school subjects in school for the development of
serious games);
• Lessons learned from methods or approaches that involved children
successfully in the development process of games;
•    Lessons learned about the development of games for children;
• Exploration of future and advanced interaction concepts for games
(e.g., physical play with digital technologies, pervasive technologies),
which are adapted to the children’s needs and preferences;
The goal of the workshop is to share experiences, best practices but
also challenges on the above topics of interests as well as to explore
future potentials on how to guide the development process of games
(e.g., through the involvement and participation of children).

SUBMISSION:
Workshop candidates are requested to submit a position paper (must be
formatted according to ACM SIGCHI Publications Format and should not
exceed 4 pages) about research or work they have been involved with
(related to the topics described above) via email to
[log in to unmask] Papers will be reviewed by the program
committee and selected according to their significance as well as their
potential to stimulate discussion. At least one author of accepted
papers needs to register for the workshop and for the conference itself.

IMPORTANT DATES:
June 1st, 2012 - Submission of Position Papers
June 15th, 2012 - Notification of Acceptance
July 31st, 2012 - Camera Ready Paper Version
September 4th, 2012 - One-Day Workshop at Fun and Games 2012

The accepted papers will be made available on the website, the
summarized results of the workshop will be published on a poster and
further discussion about the topic will be stimulated in a wider
audience during the conference. Furthermore, the papers will be included
in the adjunct proceedings of the conference. The workshop organizers
will consider the publication of a revised version of accepted papers as
part of a special issue in an HCI related journal. In order to be
considered for publication in this special issue, papers will have to be
resubmitted and undergo a reviewing process with external reviews.

ORGANIZERS:
Christiane Moser, Verena Fuchsberger, Iva Müller, Manfred Tscheligi (HCI
Unit, ICT&S Center, University of Salzburg, Austria)
Jörg Hofstätter (ovos GmbH, Vienna, Austria)
