Call for Participation
Interaction Design for Environmental Information Systems (Session F4)
at the 8th International Congress on Environmental Modelling & Software (iEMSs 2014)
San Diego, California, USA
15-19 June 2014
Organizers:
Daryl H. Hepting, Steven Frysinger, and Markus Wrobel
Description:
Environmental Informatics (or enviromatics) is a maturing subject with
interdisciplinary roots. The application of information and communication technology (ICT) to the
environment is emerging as one of great importance as the health of our planet gains priority on
research agendas. Modelling is an important aspect of enviromatics, but it is not the only one.
In order for all citizens to participate in decision-making, both the collection and utilization of
environmental data must be democratized. Cloud-based platforms that support visual analytics to
explore global-scale databases in personally meaningful ways; mobile solutions that allow effective
participation in citizen science and contribution to international databases; and handheld solutions
to interacting with local data are some examples that can help to achieve the goal. Underlying the
larger benefits of enviromatics as a tool for policy decisions is the architecture that enables those
decision-making processes. To maximize the value of the enviromatics infrastructure, interaction
design must be an integral part of the architectural plan. From a citizen’s perspective, can ICT help
with specific decisions and with placement of those decisions in an appropriate context for action?
We seek to put work on interaction design and human computer interaction into the context of
enviromatics, with the goal of understanding how to draw on and apply existing knowledge to
enviromatics so that efforts are focused on refinement and adaptation instead of
reinvention. Topics include, but are not limited to: usability analyses; decision psychology; task
analyses (including, for example, decision support); validation of ICT tools; human-computer
interface design; and human performance evaluation. In each of these, we encourage consideration
of various platforms, from mobile smartphones to the cloud.
Abstracts may be submitted for either oral or poster presentation. Accepted submissions for oral
presentation will be followed by a request for a six-page journal-quality technical research paper
that will be refereed and peer-reviewed by session organizers and ultimately published in the
conference proceedings. To submit your abstract, please visit the conference web site:
www.iemss.org/iemss2014
Please submit abstracts by 31 December 2013.
iEMSs 2014 is the official biennial conference of the International Environmental Modelling & Software
Society, sponsors of the high impact journal, Environmental Modelling & Software. iEMSs 2014 is
co-sponsored by The Consortium of Universities for the Advancement of Hydrologic Science (CUAHSI),
the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and the host organizations, Brigham Young
University and Berkeley Lab. The theme for the conference is “Bold Visions for Environmental Modelling”
and we hope to see a lot of exciting new and “bold” visions presented at this meeting. The conference
is organized around a series of themes, streams, and sessions.
Key streams include:
* Cyberinfrastructure and Cloud Computing for Environmental Modelling
* Integrated Environmental Modelling
* Climate Change Modelling
* Environmental Modelling Uncertainty Issues
* GIS and Visualization
* Environmental Modelling for Health and Human Issues
* Software and Model Design
* Data Mining and Algorithms for Environmental Modelling
* Applications of Environmental Modelling
