Call for Industrial Case Studies and Exhibits
The Industrial Case Studies and Exhibits track is targeted towards
practitioners and professionals working in the field of mobile HCI.
Papers should show the application, commercial aspects or practical
challenges in any of the areas listed in the call for papers. Of
special interest are, e.g., real-world examples that illustrate
experiences in deploying and running such systems, lessons learnt in
developing such systems, or differences between research and practice.

Papers can be up to a length of 6 pages in the extended abstracts
format. The difference to the regular papers is in the practical,
rather than strictly scientific, nature of the submissions and there
should be a strong industry background shown, e.g., through authorship
or in the text.
We welcome submission about highly interesting topics and systems that
are well written and presented for an interdisciplinary mobile HCI
audience. Papers should NOT be anonymized and must contain an abstract
with less than 150 words that clearly states the paper's contribution.
Authors are encouraged to submit or reference an illustrative video to
accompany their paper and to demonstrate their system at the

Accepted submissions will be included in the conference proceedings
published by ACM Press and included in the ACM Digital Library. The
authors will have the opportunity to present / demonstrate their work
during the conference.

We are happy to announce that Google supports our DC this year.
Doctoral students within different areas of mobile HCI are invited to
take part in the Doctoral Consortium at MobileHCI 2013. The Doctoral
Consortium (DC) will take the form of a workshop where tthe students
have the possibility to present and discuss their doctoral research
with some of the leading MobileHCI researchers. The purpose of the DC
is for the students to receive constructive feedback on their thesis
work, get advice about future developments, and share ideas and
experiences with peer students in related areas.

The workshop will last one full day and it will take place on Tuesday,
August 27, 2013.
Participants will be selected based on their anticipated contributions
to the breadth and depth of the intellectual discussions of the
consortium. To maximize the benefits from the DC, participants should
have advanced beyond the early stages in their thesis research but not
yet be in the finalizing phase of their work.
Preparing the Submission:
The research areas covered by the DC are the same as the MobileHCI
conference generally and can be found in the participation website.
Students may come from different academic disciplines, such as
interaction design, computer science, cognitive science, psychology or
To apply, submit a concise proposal of at most two pages in the ACM
archive format, including the following issues:
Title of your thesis research and your name
Research goals, questions and approach
Studies/research conducted so far, including key results
Remaining research efforts
References, including your own relevant publications (accepted and submitted)
Additionally, write a biographical note of at most one page describing
your background, describing briefly your studies, stage of research,
completed and planned publications related to the doctoral research,
and relevant work experience. In addition, include a paragraph of your
expectations and motivation to attend the DC as well as issues or
questions you want to discuss with the DC participants.
Submit a combined document (the proposal and bio, altogether max 3
pages) in PDF format via the Precision Conference system by April
12th, 2013. Note that the submissions should not be anonymized.
The proposals will be evaluated by a review committee consisting of
the DC chairs and additional senior mobile HCI experts. Approximately
8 participants will be selected to participate in the Doctoral
Consortium in MobileHCI 2013. Students are expected to read at least
two other accepted DC proposals prior to the DC, and be prepared to
provide comments about them in the DC.

Panels are sessions that involve significant interaction with the
conference audience. A Panel consists of an invited group of experts
who may debate or critique concepts or artifacts, enact some aspect of
their expertise, or reflect on and compare their diverse experiences.
Panels should also include involvement from the audience, often
through questions and answers, voting or critique of the experts'
presentations, and so on. Typically, panel sessions cover the length
of a paper session (i.e. 1.5 hours), however, we are open to other
creative proposals, schedule permitting.
We are aiming to create panel sessions full of exciting (and sometimes
controversial) discussions. Panels that encourage debate and the
inclusion of the audience are preferred. Example topics could include
(but are not limited to):
location privacy: necessity, obstacle or a thing of the past?
the future of mobile: what topics will be hot at mobile HCI 2023?
mine is better than yours: do we need benchmarks for mobile HCI?
taming the chaos: how to make all your personal devices work together?
slide to shake before you speak: how to map functions to modalities?
Preparing the Submission
Proposed panels are encouraged to relate to one or more of the topics
as outlined in the general Call for Papers for MobileHCI 2013. An
abstract (as described below) should be submitted by April 12, 2013
through the Precision Conference System. Panels will be chosen from
those submitted through this process as well as additional panels
suggested by the Technical Program Committee and Panel chairs. Upon
acceptance, panel organizers should prepare the camera ready version
of the abstract by May 31, 2013.
Proposals must be in the MobileHCI Extended Abstract format and
consist of a 4-6 page abstract covering:
The topic area to be discussed and the applicability of this
discussion for a panel session at MobileHCI. It should highlight
specific differences in viewpoints in the community and why a panel
format is ideal for exploring this topic.
The format of the panel (e.g. will panelists each present first, for
how long, how will the audience be engaged for the duration of the
The moderator name, affiliation, and a short bio.
The proposed panelists' names, affiliations, and a short bio
Confidentiality of submissions is maintained during the review
process. All rejected submissions will be kept confidential in
perpetuity. All submitted materials for accepted submissions will be
kept confidential until the start of the conference.
Accepted Panel abstracts will be placed in the ACM Digital Library,
where they will remain accessible to thousands of researchers and
practitioners worldwide. Submission of the final camera ready version
includes and is not complete without giving us permission to
distribute your final camera ready version as described above. This
permission is given during submitting the final version of your work
via the Conference Review System.
