AutomotiveUI ´13: The 5th International Conference on Automotive User Interfaces and Interactive Vehicular Applications

October 27-30, 2013, Eindhoven, The Netherlands

For further Information visit: http://www.auto-ui.org

Conference Goals
AutomotiveUI, the International Conference on Automotive User Interfaces and Interactive Vehicular Applications, is the premier forum for UI research in the automotive domain. AutomotiveUI brings together researchers and practitioners interested in both the technical and the human aspects of in-vehicle user interfaces and applications. AutomotiveUI '13 will address novel in-vehicle services, models of and concepts for enhancing the driver experience, topics (models and UI concepts) related to driver performance and distraction, effects of developments such as (semi-)autonomous driving, and the varying needs of different user groups.
In-car interactive technology is becoming ubiquitous and cars are increasingly connected to the outside world. Drivers and passengers use this technology because it provides valuable services. Some technology, such as collision warning systems, assists drivers in performing their primary in-vehicle task (driving). Other technology provides information on myriad subjects or offers entertainment to the driver and passengers.
The design of in-car devices has historically been the responsibility of car manufacturers and their parts suppliers. However, the responsibility is now shifting toward larger and more fluctuating groups including car OEMs, Tier 1 and Tier 2 suppliers of factory-installed electronics, and the manufacturers of hardware and software brought into the vehicle (e.g, personal navigation devices, smartphones, and tablets).
The challenge that arises from the proliferation of in-car devices is that they may distract drivers from the primary task of driving, with possibly disastrous results. Thus, one of the major goals of this conference is to explore ways in which in-car user interfaces can be designed so as to lessen driver distraction while still enabling valuable services.
Concerning driving safety, our focus in designing in-car user interfaces should not be purely on eliminating distractions. In-car user interfaces also offer the opportunity to improve the driver's performance (e.g., increasing awareness of upcoming hazards).
In-car interfaces can also enhance the experience of all occupants in the car. To this end, a further goal of AutomotiveUI '13 is the exploration of in-car interfaces that address the varying needs of different users (including disabled drivers, elderly drivers, passengers, and the users of rear-seat entertainment systems). The conference goal is to showcase ways to advance the state of the art in vehicular user experiences, for enhanced safety, comfort, and enjoyment.

2) Workshops and Tutorials (submission deadline: July 7th, 2013)
3) Work-in-progress & Interactive Demos (submission deadline: September 8th, 2013)
4) Industrial Showcase (submission deadline: September 8th, 2013)
5) Doctoral colloquium (submission deadline: September 8th, 2013)
1) Full and short papers
Authors are invited to submit papers that are 4 or 8 pages long, formatted in accordance with the two-column ACM SIGCHI format (http://www.acm.org/sigs/publications/proceedings-templates). We are happy to consider a variety of styles for inclusion in the proceedings, such as academic papers, design sketches, interaction concepts, and industrial case studies. Along with the paper, authors are also encouraged to submit an accompanying video. The papers will be selected in a peer-review process. All accepted submissions will be included in the conference proceedings and we plan to secure publication in the ACM digital library.
At the conference, papers will be presented as oral talks or posters. Eight page papers will be presented as talks, while 4 page papers will be invited for presentations as either oral talks or posters.
If your paper is accepted, at least one author must register for the conference by the early registration deadline (September 25th) in order for the final version of the paper to be published in the conference proceedings.
Please submit your work using the EasyChair conference submission system available at https://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=automotiveui13

Submission deadline: June 1st, 2013
Notification July 14th,2013
Camera-ready August 18th, 2013

2) Workshops and Tutorials
Workshops provide an opportunity for researchers and practitioners to discuss themes of common interest in a less formal setting. We are open to all topic areas, but do encourage workshop proposals covering emerging and future trends in the field. The proposed workshop should consider topics that can move the field forward and suggest promising new research directions. The criteria, reviewing and acceptance will be handled by the workshop organizers.

Tutorials provide an opportunity for participants to learn about the state of the art both about theory, methods and concepts relating to the areas addressed by the Automotive UI conference. We invite proposals for tutorials from researchers and experienced practitioners.

Workshop and Tutorial proposals should be submitted as 4 page (maximum) write-ups. We accept proposals for full day (~6 hours) or half day (3-4 hours, morning or afternoon) workshops and tutorials. Please format your proposal according to the ACM SIGCHI format (http://www.acm.org/sigs/publications/proceedings-templates). Accepted workshops and tutorials are publicized as part of the conference. Participation in workshops and tutorials is only open to people who register for the main conference (participation itself is free of charge).

Workshop proposals must contain the following:
§ general goal of the workshop
§ name, email address, and affiliation of the presenter(s). Note that each listed presenter should be registered and present at the workshop
§ topics of interest
§ proposal for the schedule of the workshop including the preferred type and number of participants you will expect to take part
§ ideas for publicizing the workshop
§ procedures for handling the reviews
§ thoughts about how the outcome of the workshop can be can be captured and retained in a meaningful way
§ (short) organizer biographies

Tutorial proposals must contain the following:
§ tutorial title and length
§ name, email address, and affiliation of the presenter(s). Note that each listed presenter should be registered and present at the tutorial
§ detailed outline of the tutorial, along with descriptions of the objectives, its relevance to Automotive UI, and course materials/handouts
§ target audience level (introductory, intermediate, advanced) and prerequisite knowledge or skills, if any
§ history of prior tutorials delivered by the presenter(s)

Upon proposal acceptance, organizers should set up an external web page delivering all the necessary information for interested participants.

Submissions should be made by sending them directly to [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>
Submission deadline: July 7th, 2013
Notification July 21st, 2013
3) Work-in-progress and Interactive Demos
Work-in-progress and interactive demos should report on ongoing or late-breaking work, or include research prototypes that can generate discussions and demonstrations with the other conference participants. The format for this track is a 2-page abstract that, if accepted, will appear in the adjunct proceedings of the conference. In addition to the abstract, authors are also encouraged to submit an accompanying video. Participants in this track will present their work in a poster / demonstration session and have one minute each to introduce their posters to the conference audience.
The demonstration submissions must also include a separate appendix or video describing in detail the elements of the demonstration, the technical requirements of the demonstration (required visual and acoustical settings, space requirements, the power supply needed, networking options, etc.).

Please format your abstract according to ACM SIGCHI format templates (http://www.acm.org/sigs/publications/proceedings-templates).

If your abstract is accepted, at least one author must register for the conference by the early registration deadline in order for the work-in-progress and/or interactive demonstration abstracts to be published in the adjunct conference proceedings.

Final version: October 6th, 2013

4) Industrial Showcase
We encourage submissions from industry that showcase recent developments, new ideas, new intellectual property, demonstrations and prototypes, tools, or any other contribution of industrial relevance. The goal is to discuss the industry's viewpoints, needs and activities and to close the gap between research and practice. Submissions are not bound to any specific format. As a default, please use the format for Work-in-progress and interactive demos, but we are happy to discuss alternative ways to submit and to present your piece.
Industrial showcase pieces will appear in the adjunct proceedings, which will be published electronically on the conference website.
