Learning Technology Newsletter invites short articles, case studies, and
project reports for special issue on "Learning Communities & Web Service
Technologies". The special issue will be published in Volume 6, Issue 1
(January, 2004).

** The newsletter is of non-refereed nature though the articles will be
selected and edited by the Guest Editor. **

"Learning Communities & Web Service Technologies"


The use of Web services on the World Wide Web is expanding rapidly as the
need for
application-to-application communication and interoperability grows. These
services
provide a standard means of communication among different software
applications involved
in presenting dynamic context-driven information to the user.

Building a learning community is a collaborative process that necessitates
an artful mix
of direction and facilitation requiring more than just technology.
Collaborative learning
communities go beyond just online discussions - they represent purposeful
groups focused
on advancing knowledge, elevating personal and organizational
effectiveness, and generating
tangible results.

Beyond traditional features like online discussions, instant messaging,
document management,
and searchable member profiles, the next generation web-based learning
communities
environments should provide powerful tools for facilitating meaningful and
productive
interactions between members.

The theme of this issue is “Learning Communities and Web Services
Technologies”. Recently,
there are a number of efforts aiming to investigate whether web services
can provide the
essential infrastructure for the design and development of next generation
learning
communities supporting environments.  Within this issue, we would like to
capture the
state-of-the-art in this field both in terms of initial research results,
as well as,
technological developments in progress.  In particular, we welcome
contributions from
collaborative R&D projects under development and academic discussion
papers on this subject.

* Submission procedure:

1. The articles in the newsletter are limited to 1000 words. Overlength
articles will
not be published.
2. The manuscripts should be either in Word or RTF format. Any figures
used in the
contributions would be required separately in a graphic format (gif or
jpeg). The
figures should also be embedded in the text at appropriate places.
3. Please send the manuscripts by email as attachment to the guest editor at
[log in to unmask], copied to [log in to unmask] (Subject: Learning
Technology
January 2004 Submission).
4. In the email, please state clearly that the manuscript is original
material that has
not been published, and is not being considered for publication elsewhere.
