IUI-CADUI '04 - CALL FOR WORKSHOP PROPOSALS

Workshops provide small communities of people with the opportunity to meet and
to engage in interactive and in-depth discussion about a topic of common
interest. We are seeking to provide this opportunity in conjunction with
IUI-CAUDI'04, the International Conference on Intelligent User Interfaces and
Computer-Aided Design of User Interfaces (http://www.iuiconf.org)

Workshops addressing any topic of interest to the IUI-CADUI community related
to the scope of the IUI or CADUI conference, as well as to the intersection of
both are desired. Workshops can focus on the principles of intelligent
interfaces and their applications in the field of human-computer interaction
and artificial intelligence, including methodologies, applications, and
evaluation. They can also focus on tools, design environments, and related
infrastructure that assist designers and developers in the user interface
development life cycle.

Workshops are intended to be half-day or full-day long and will be held on
January 13, 2004, prior to the main IUI-CADUI conference. Abstracts of the
accepted workshops will appear in the IUI proceedings.

Submission Format

Each proposal should be four pages in length and should contain the following information:
1. A cover page including
- Workshop title
- Name, affiliation, address, e-mail address for each organizer
- Identification of the primary contact person(s)
- The proposed length: a half day or a full day

2. Background and Motivation: What is the overall topic of the workshop? Why is
this topic of particular interest at this time? If the workshop has been
organized in the past at an IUI, CADUI or other conference, please give details
(audience, URL) and describe why it should be performed again or how
improvements will be made.

3. Objectives: What are the objectives that the workshop aims to achieve?
Objectives may include targeting a predefined set of focus questions, present
alternate views on a particular issue that is of concern to the IUI/CADUI
communities and attempt to resolve the issue, identify priorities for new
directions of research and initiate the appropriate collaborations.

4. Format: Give a description of the proposed workshop format. This includes
the planned activities (such as position statements, invited talks, panels,
demos, and general discussion), as well as how these activities address the
workshop objectives. Preference will be given to proposals for activities
designed to fuel discussion and interaction among participants: workshops
consisting solely of paper presentations are discouraged. Provide a preliminary
schedule with estimated times. Design your schedule for a length of 3 hours
(half-day workshop) or 6 hours (full-day workshop), with a lunch break and one
and two coffee breaks, respectively. Specify also if you are planning any
pre-workshop activity and dissemination of results (e.g., including plans for
books or journals).

5. Potential Participants: Indicate how you plan to select participants and
contributions to the workshop. State your estimate of the number of
participants. If possible, give a list of tentatively confirmed participants.

6. Organizers: Give short descriptions of each of the organizers qualifications
related to the workshop topics. Indicate if you are planning to have a Program
Committee to help with the organization/review process, and give names and
contact information of PC members, if available.

Organizers' Responsibilities

The organizers of a workshop will be responsible for:
- Producing a two-page abstract for inclusion in the conference proceedings.
- Producing and distributing a Call for Participation. It should be made clear
that all workshop participants are required to register for both the IUI-CADUI
   conference and for the workshop.
- Selecting the workshop participants and the contributions to be included in
   the workshop.
- Maintaining a web site that contains the materials from the workshop, and
link common important dates to the IUI/CADUI website to ensure coherence.
- Producing the workshop notes. The notes must be distributed in printed form
to the workshop participants at the conference site, at or before the beginning
of the workshop. They must also be made available on the workshop website.
- Scheduling and coordinating the activities of the workshop.
- Maintaining contact and collaboration with the Workshop Chairs to ensure
smooth organization of all aspects, including consistency of web sites and
  local arrangements.
- Be prepared to provide a presentation of the workshop results during the
  conference (format to be appointed).

Submission Instructions

Proposals should be submitted electronically in PDF format
to the workshop co-chairs:
Cristina Conati and Birgit Bomsdorf

identification of proposals with overlapping topics. In such cases, the
organizers may be invited to cooperate and to coordinate their efforts.
