Gesture Workshop 2001       Wednesday 18th - Friday 20th April 2001

The International Gesture Workshop is a forum for the exchange of ideas
and research currently in progress across disciplines. It aims to
encourage multidisciplinary collaboration by providing a platform for
participants to share, discuss and critique both research in progress
and more completed research with a multidisciplinary audience.

Within the focus of human-computer interaction or computer-mediated
communication, the workshop will encompass all aspects of interaction
involving gesture and sign language. The preliminary programme will
include but is not restricted to work in the following categories:

PRELIMINARY PROGRAMME CATEGORIES
Gestures and sign language in human-machine interaction:
  * Automatic recognition and interpretation of gestures and sign
language
  * Automatic analysis and synthesis of gestures and sign language
  * Computational representation of gestures and sign language, from
    perceptual level to semantic level
  * User issues, usability studies, application paradigms
  * Gesture and human-movement tracking techniques
  * System architectures
  * Applications and demonstrator systems
Nature of gesture and sign language:
  * Gestural and sign-language communication
  * Gesture and sign language perception and production
  * Modelling and analysis techniques
  * Coding techniques
Multimodality:
  * Co-verbal gestures
  * Fusion of gestures and other modalities: Architectures,
    level of fusion, representation
  * Temporal relations between gestures, speech and other modalities
  * Applications
Tutorial/Lectures:
Submissions for this part of the programme should be in the form of a
tutorial or lecture that would be of significant interest to the
community.

SUBMISSION DETAIL
There are four categories of submission: paper, poster, demonstration
and tutorial/lecture. More detail can be found on the web-site

PUBLICATION
In line with the practice of previous gesture workshops, presenters are
invited to submit their papers for publication in a subsequent peer-
reviewed publication of high-quality. In previous years, this has been
published by Springer Verlag http://www.springer.de/comp/lncs. All
participants will receive a copy at no extra cost.

ACCOMMODATION
Recommended hotels or hotels where a special rate has been negotiated
will be posted on the web-site. It is expected that a limited number of
early bird registration and accommodation packages will we available
(January 2001) in conjunction with the London School of Economics
http://www.lse.ac.uk/accommodation/rosebery.htm. The objective will be
to make available accommodation to suit a range of budgets.

REGISTRATION FEES
The registration fees will be published on the web-site in the New
Year. All efforts have been made to reduce costs to a minimum. Fees
will include workshop attendance, programme, copies of the subsequent
peer-reviewed publication, refreshments etc. For early bird combination

TRAVEL
City University is easily accessible by all forms of public transport.
Travelling from the major international London airports at Gatwick,
London Heathrow, Luton, City and mainline train and coach stations to
the university is quick and straightforward. The university's central
location provides easy access by underground, bus, or rail to all of
