Dear Friends,

I am running a special track on sociotechnical aspects of HCI @ HCII International 2013: 21 - 26 July 2013, Mirage Hotel, Las Vegas, Nevada, USA.

We hope to have 5 or 6 papers in that session. If you think you can contribute, please send me a quick email by 15th of July with a potential title and your background. I will then send a invite via the CMS and put it the pipeline for your paper to be reviewed. Successful papers will be published by Springer.

Below is some of the rationale for the track:

New challenges are facing interaction design. On one hand because of advances in technology – pervasive, ubiquitous, multimodal and adaptive computing – are changing the nature of interaction. On the other, social media, massive multiplayer games and collaboration software extends the boundaries of HCI to deal with interaction in settings of remote communication and collaboration. Understanding these challenges require a multidisciplinary perspective, which not only anchored in technology and design but also in the social sciences and the humanities. The aim of this session is to provide examples for HCI practitioners and researchers that illustrate how sociotechnical insights can be used to inform interaction design, and more generally how social science methods and theories can help to enrich the conceptual framework of systems development and participatory design.

This session will contain presentations in HCI and CSCW who work on expanding the connection between social science research and interaction design practice under the umbrella ‘sociotechnical’. The challenge is to achieve some level of ‘translation’ between the two domains of discourse in order to improve the design of interactive systems. I hope you will be interested in submitting a paper and being part of this discussion.

Kind Regards,

José
