Yes, that was my main concern.
One way we are considering getting around this is to offer a "textbook
customization" page/interface that would allow the user to opt out of the
"popup for examples" default and instead would just display the page with
all of the examples in the main content flow. This would create the longer
page we are trying to avoid, but would allow those with screen readers a
better situation.
Ideally, this customization page would also for other options such as
choosing to not load bandwidth heavy interactive elements (Flash/Director)
as well as allowing for alternative text displays.
