Beyond the Workstation:
Human Interaction with Mobile Systems

Papers are invited for a special issue of ACM Transactions on Computer Human
Interaction (ToCHI) on the topic of Human Computer Interaction and Mobile
Systems.

The last few years have seen the development and marketing of a vast array
of mobile computing devices. These devices open up many new opportunities
for accessing and using digital information, at times, in places and in
settings that would be impossible using conventional workstations.
However, they also introduce new challenges since conventional
workstation-based interaction techniques do not transfer well to these new
contexts. Information has to be accessed and understood through tiny
displays, and user input and interaction take place under very different
constraints from those for which standard keyboards and pointing devices
have been designed. Moreover, mobile devices suggest and make possible a
whole new set of innovative systems and applications of which we have
limited understanding and experience.

In May 1998, 70 academic and industrial researchers attended a workshop at
the University of Glasgow to consider the problems of, and potential
solutions for, effective interaction with mobile systems. This special issue
of ToCHI was proposed as a result of that workshop, but is intended to offer
a wider forum in which developments in interacting with mobile systems can
be presented and discussed. The special issue will be edited by Philip Gray
of the Department of Computing Science in Glasgow University, and Allan
MacLean of Xerox Research Centre Europe. We are soliciting high quality
manuscripts that make a substantive contribution to identifying issues or
developing solutions involving human interaction with mobile systems. Like
the workshop, the special issue is intended to cover interaction with any of
the emerging range of mobile systems including PDAs, voice terminals,
smartphones, laptops, wearable devices and other portable computing devices.

Example topics include (but are not limited to):

1) Novel user interfaces and interaction techniques for mobile devices, such
as visualisation techniques for large data sets on small displays, or speech
input for portable devices.

2) Specific applications for mobile systems, such as portable digital
reading devices, authoring Web pages for hand-held devices, or support for
cooperation between users of mobile devices.

3) Case studies or evaluations of mobile systems in use, or studies of work
settings which identify opportunities and requirements for mobile systems.

4) Ergonomics of hand-held devices, e.g. screen quality, accuracy of
interaction, or use in remote or hazardous locations.

5) Requirements engineering for next generation mobile systems, including
different kinds of mobile users, different forms of mobility, and location
sensitive applications

6) Usability issues and solutions in the integration of mobile systems with
the existing infrastructure such as telecommunications, office and desktop
systems. Examples might include designing new interfaces for accessing
existing systems through mobile devices or designing for variable service
availability and temporary connections.

ToCHI's normal rigorous journal refereeing standards will apply. To aid
cohesion and quality, all papers will be cross-refereed by the authors of
other papers in the special issue, as well as by reviewers from outside the
group. People submitting papers may therefore be asked to contribute to the
review process.

Submission format: ToCHI uses digital submission and distribution of
manuscripts. Details of the submission process can be found on the ToCHI
website at http://www.acm.org/tochi/. ACM requires digital submission of
accepted papers in one of several formats. These formats are specified at
the ToCHI website. To facilitate the publication process, authors are
advised to use one of these formats when submitting their manuscript. Be
sure to indicate in your cover letter that you are submitting your
manuscript for the special issue on Human Interaction with Mobile Systems.

If you have any questions, please contact the editors at:

Deadline for receipt of manuscripts: 15 January 1999.
