Second Call for Contributions
-----------------------------------------------
Intelligent Users/Intelligent Cities - Workshop at the Symposium on Smart
Cities during the 9th International Conference on Intelligent Environments
(IE '13)
http://intelligentcitiesie13.orbitlab.gr

June 16, 2013 - Athens, Greece

Overview
-------------
As cinema works like a mediator between history, urban and social
transformations, the film-screen has become the mirror of modern life. At
the same time, the cinematic city imitates urban living; the city is
described not only by its physical parts (places), but also by the human
activities (going to work, eating etc.), public events (festivals,
demonstrations etc.) and the intelligent systems depicted (mobile phones,
sensors, antennas etc.).
Movies, as well as architecture, create a narrative, a set of rules, a
paradigm. However, there is a structure in every image, scene, or movie, as
nothing is placed accidentally. In other words, documenting and analyzing
the data provides a new vocabulary and set of tools to reinvent the
physical space. The result is not an architectural object or a new movie
but the narrative itself; a way of thinking on intelligent environments and
a way of thinking on architecture.
This workshop focuses on user behavior and familiarization with intelligent
systems as well as the latters’ integration within the urban space. In
particular, it will try to identify techniques, which, through the
examination of the characteristics of the user of the smart city, will make
relevant and reasonable the way the city is transformed into the smart and
augmented city of the future. The main goal is to examine how computing
weaves its way through the urban environment and the everyday life of the
habitants.

Topics of Interest
-------------------------
We seek contributions on topics including, but not limited to, the
following:
• Who is the user of the smart city? Who are we designing for? Who is
consuming architecture and technology?
• How are intelligent technologies and environments portrayed in the arts
(e.g., futuristic cinema, literature, installations, artworks)?
• How do users perceive data flows in filmed representations of intelligent
cities and settings?
• How does the viewer perceive digitally enhanced environments?
• Cinema as Simulation: a field to test theories, stimulate thoughts and
ideas, experiment on the concept of ‘intelligent cities’.
• The intelligent city as the result of a bottom-up approach (populated by
intelligent users) or that of a top-down approach (crafted by intelligent
designers).
• Can cinema ‘create’ intelligent users, and familiarize them with smart
technologies?
• Computing at the periphery of human living: can Science Fiction act as a
window to things to come?
• Are intelligent users intelligent enough: Technology adoption ‘as seen on
TV’ or for actual needs fulfilment?
