* Designing and Developing Collaborative Technologies with/for Children and their Families *
at the IDC 2013 Conference June 24th, 2013 in NY, USA

This one-day workshop will take place at IDC 2013 and aims to bring together researchers and practitioners in the fields of human-computer interaction, child-computer interaction, interaction design, instructional design, etc.
*** TOPIC ***
The family environment provides a fruitful and at the same time challenging context to design with/for children and their families. The goal of this one-day workshop is to share experiences, best practices and lessons learned to explore the future potentials on how to guide the involvement and participation of children and their families in the (co-)design and development process of interactive intergenerational (collaborative) technologies. When designing for families, additional considerations are needed, such as the importance of routines, the affective consequences of technology, and the need for supporting playfulness and fun. The children and their families should be enabled to more directly inspire and shape collaborative technologies that are developed. This raises the question of how to design technologies for children and their families. One challenge is to develop and adapt participatory and user-centered design strategies in which family members can actively participate in the design of new technologies. Developing and critically considering metrics of success for collaborative family technologies is another open challenge for the community.
*** PARTICIPATION ***
The goal of the workshop is to share experiences and best practices as well as to explore future potentials on how to guide the involvement and participation of children and their families in the development process of interactive and collaborative technologies. Position papers are invited, but are not limited, on the following topics:
- Methodological challenges to get children and their families involved as informants, co-designers and evaluators of collaborative technologies, e.g., how can parents support children's participation; what methodological tools are applied in the context of the home;
- Opportunities and challenges when designing with families, e.g., what does it mean to design with and for families; what kind of roles do children have when designing together with their families; benefits of participatory or user-centered design when designing with and for families;
- Understanding the different roles of stakeholders (researchers, children, parents, grandparents, other family members, etc.), e.g., what kind of role does research have in child-siblings, child-parent, child-grandparent, child-parent-teacher interaction, etc.; what do people mean by "families"; how are families defined;
- Lessons learned from methods or approaches that already involved children and their families successfully in the development process of interactive technologies;
- Exploration of advanced interaction and collaboration concepts for families within the context home or extended home (e.g., spare time activities or educational purposes);
*** SUBMISSION ***
Submissions are expected in the form of 4 page position papers formatted according to ACM SIGCHI Publications Format (http://chi2013.acm.org/authors/format/#archiveformat) about research they have been involved.

Papers will be reviewed by the workshop organizers and selected according to their significance as well as their potential to stimulate discussion. At least one author of accepted papers needs to register for the workshop and for the conference itself. All accepted papers will be made available on the website.
