WORKSHOP THEME: Aesthetic Intelligence for Ambient Intelligence

The integration of digital technology into physical spaces is already happening and changes our environment, both visually and functionally. But how does Ambient Intelligence manifest itself? This workshop addresses the ongoing transformation process and provides a platform for interested researchers and practitioners to discuss the visual and perceptual possibilities that arise from the use of Ambient Intelligence technology in public as well as private space.

The focus of the workshop will be on the relevance of beauty and aesthetic values for Ambient Intelligence and the meaning of aesthetically pleasing design for usability, technology acceptance, and well-being in technology - enhanced spaces. Targeting technology developers as well as media designers, the goal is to provide a platform for the exchange of ideas, initiation of collaborations and the development of methodologies for aesthetic competence.

WORKSHOP TOPICS

The workshop aims at bringing together researchers and practitioners from different disciplines to discuss the interrelation of functional, architectural, and aesthetic factors and their consequences for the design, use and acceptance of smart environments and to discuss the multi-modal perceptual possibilities that arise from the use of Ambient Intelligence technology. The focus for this year’s workshop will be on methodological aspects of integrating aesthetic design goals into the development of smart environments.

Recommended topics for position papers include, but are not limited to, the following:

Architecture

   * Smart Buildings and Smart Spaces
   * Intelligent Facades
   * Human-Building Interaction
   * Phenomenology
   * Innovative Materials
   * Urban Screens and Large Displays
   * Novel Living Concepts

Design

   * User Experience Design
   * Participatory Design
   * Emotional and Hedonic Design
   * Interaction Design
   * Multidisciplinary or Interdisciplinary Design
   * Tools and Design Techniques for Smart Environments

Human-Computer Interaction

   * Human Aspects of Future and Emerging Technologies
   * User Diversity
   * Human-Computer Interaction in Smart Environments
   * User-Centered or Human-Centered Design
   * Emotion and Affective User Interfaces
   * Adaptive and Tangible User Interfaces for Smart Environments

We particularly encourage position papers on the methodological reflection of the aesthetic decision-making processes involved.

SUBMISSION

Interested researchers are invited to submit a position paper (2-4 pages) via the workshop submission website (https://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=axi2014). Papers should focus on current research activities and/or interesting aspects of future work. All position papers will be peer-reviewed and evaluated based on their novelty, originality, and relevance to the workshop theme.

Authors of accepted position papers will be invited to submit a revised and extended version of their paper until October 24 for inclusion in the online proceedings.

Depending on the quality of the submissions and the interest from authors gathered at the workshop, a special issue in an appropriate journal will be considered.
