The vast screen real estate, which is provided by large-scale interaction environments, presents novel ways to visualize and interact with data-rich models. In parallel to this technological revolution, interactive surfaces have also become widespread in different sizes and devices, from large-scale walls to small tablets. The tabletop community witnessed, in recent years, an increased usage of interactive tables, tablet-sized surfaces and mobile phones.
The opportunities for innovation exist, but the large scale environments and tabletop communities have not yet thoroughly addressed the problem of bringing effective collaboration activities using multiple interactive surfaces, especially in complex work domains. Of particular interest is the potential synergy that one can obtain by effectively combining different-sized surfaces.

For this Special Issue of the Journal on Computer-Supported Collaborative Work (JCSCW) on “Collaboration meets Interactive Surfaces - Walls, Tables, Tablets and Phones”, we invite research papers focusing on topics that include, but are not limited to, the following:
• Methodologies for analysis of collaborative interactive surfaces;
• Design and evaluation of collaborative environments with interactive surfaces, either remotely or co-located;
• Collaborative applications on interactive surfaces for concrete domains, e.g. 3D visualization, mechanical engineering, medical visualizations, emergency response scenarios, etc.;
• Communication, cooperation and coordination as well as social protocols;
• Interactive surfaces to enhance spatial perception of content and/or support navigation during collaboration activities;
• Issues when moving from desktop-based collaboration to large-scale walls, tabletops and touch-based mobile devices;
• Combining surfaces and devices for multiple users;
• Novice users and sporadic uses of interactive surfaces;
• Collaborative interactive surfaces for Public spaces;
• Learning experiences using interactive surfaces;
• High level concepts of evaluation, metrics for usability intrusiveness, mutual awareness, engagement, etc.;
• Concurrent manipulation of information in interactive surfaces.

Submission Guidelines:
This special issue will include 7-10 full papers. Abstracts can be sent to any of the editors via email by January 31, 2014 (see the e-mails at the top of this message). Manuscripts of about 8,000 - 10,000 words should be submitted by February 28, 2014. Authors must prepare manuscripts according to the standards of the International Journal on CSCW and submit the manuscript via the JCSCW Editorial Manager Online Site.
