   Actually, I'm doing both. The DII COE is a Common Operating Environment
for many DoD systems, including Command and Control systems, where I seem
to spend most of my time.

   But the C2 environment is very much an embedded environment, in spite of
the GUI.  Some applications have very long-term deadlines, others have very
hard real-time deadlines that are just that.  For example, the COE may end
up in places like the next generation AWACS, which is why Peter Krupp and
others are working hard on making a real-time capable version of the COE.
