Call for Papers for a Special Issue of Journal of Experimental and
Theoretical Artificial Intelligence on “AI and New Media” (Taylor &
Francis, http://www.tandfonline.com/toc/teta20/current#.UYsLvSuglRA)
*Submission deadline:*
July 31, 2013 (abstracts)
December 20, 2013 (full papers for peer review)
April 1, 2014 (revised full papers due)
Guest Editors: Selma Sabanovic and Hamid Ekbia (Indiana University
Bloomington)
This special issue invites contributions exploring the relationship between
artificial intelligence (AI) and new media, a timely but underexplored
topic. Scholars and practitioners are invited to submit work that defines
and discusses issues related to the intersection of AI and new media from a
variety of perspectives. One area of interest are AI applications in new
media, as the tools and techniques of AI are put to use in the design and
implementation of new media and in the analysis of the vast amounts of data
generated in digital environments. Another relevant topic relates to the
various representations of AI in new media, where it is discussed as an
emerging technology, a fantasy, or a futuristic vision. Finally, the way
humans understand, experience, and interact with new media can be
mediatedby AI, including computational methods such as machine
learning and data
mining that affect what we see on the Internet, or algorithms that enable
machines to interact with us in more intuitive and natural ways.
Investigating one or more of these relationships between AI and new media
-- applications, representations, and mediations -- constitutes the focus
of this special issue.
This special issue aims to include work exploring the intersections of AI
and new media from a variety of theoretically and empirically grounded
perspectives. These may include, but are not limited to, the following
topics:
- social and ethical issues brought up by AI applications in social media,
e.g. privacy;
- teleoperated and interactive robots as new media;
- artificial intelligence applied to digital art;
- user experiences and reactions to interactive and dynamic new media (e.g.
telepresence robots, social agents);
- new media applications of AI, such as personalization of content,
recommendation systems, etc.
- the use of AI in games and virtual worlds;
- human-computer interaction related to AI and new media;
- data mining and machine learning in the context of new media technologies;
We encourage submission of technical, social, and humanistic treatments of
the topic, aiming to encourage its broad and open exploration.
If you are planning to submit to the special issue, please submit an
abstract of 600-800 words that clearly describes the main argument and/or
questions of the article, as well as the conceptual frameworks and methods
employed in its development. Abstracts are due by July 31 2013, to
[log in to unmask] and [log in to unmask] with “JETAI Special Issue” in the
subject line.
Full manuscripts will be due on December 20 2013, also to the editors.
Articles can be anywhere from 6,000 to 20,000 words in length and should be
formatted in the standard JETAI format. See the Instructions for Authors at
the Journal’s homepage. Papers should be sent directly to the editors at
the above-mentioned emails, indicating that the paper is a submission for
JETAI in the subject line. Please do not submit to the ScholarOne
submission site.
Also feel free to contact us at the emails listed above if you have any
questions.
