Smart for Life: Designing Smart Home Technologies that Evolve with Users
CHI'15 workshop, Seoul, Korea

- Submission deadline: January 19, 2015
- Notifications: February 13, 2015
- Workshop: April 18, 2015
- Further details at:

The research and design of smart home technologies has, to date, focused primarily on supporting users at/within specific life stages. Rarely have these efforts considered resonant design opportunities or potential smart home transitions over the life course. This workshop aims to exchange knowledge between different research and design practice communities, and generate resonant smart home technology design ideas through interactive, team-based design activities. We ask: 1) How and why might users at a particular life stage adopt smart home solutions? 2) How can we design smart home technologies to support users at and as they transition between successive life stages?

Some central questions we hope to address include (but are not limited to):
- How might smart home technologies facilitate users’ transitions between life stages?
- How might smart home technologies (i.e., infrastructure, applications) need to be modified during these transitions, and what conditions/circumstances would trigger/indicate these changes?
- How might pragmatic issues, such as budgets, technical maintenance and the spectrum of technological expertise, be addressed in these transitional processes?
- What would it take to turn the idea into an actual consumer-facing product?
- What are the implications for the end-to-end user experience, from buying a product through to its installation, use, adaptation, and disposal?

We invite 4-page submissions in CHI extended abstract format (

a) Ethnographic, user, and/or life course research papers that contribute insights about prospective users and their contexts (e.g., informing/generating personas or scenarios);
b) Design or development papers that demonstrate the use/examples of design patterns/technology paradigms (e.g., novel technologies); or
c) Visionary or conceptual papers inspiring the ideation of design ideas (e.g., life scenarios in a technological future, smart homes in popular media).
d) Additional option for designers/industry professionals: Product reports and/or lessons learned from consumer products, including visual documentation of industry-based design/development processes and/or business outcomes reflecting your position on the workshop theme.

Please email submissions to [log in to unmask] by January 5, 2015. Submissions will be peer-reviewed and the program committee will select up to 18 participants based on their quality, relevance, and applicability to the workshop themes. Upon acceptance, at least one author must register for the workshop and at least one day of the conference. Please see the CHI 2014 website for estimates on workshop & conference pricing:
