------------------------------------------------------------------
Call for Papers: 1st Int. Workshop on Cognitive Load and User Experience
- What Dependencies? (CLUX'13)

http://clux.iese.fraunhofer.de/

September 3rd 2013 - Cape Town, South Africa
In conjunction with INTERACT 2013, September 2nd - 6th 2013

Deadline: May 20th 2013 (23:59 American Samoa)
Submission of position papers via email to [log in to unmask]

[Apologies for cross-posting]

Background:
The design and implementation of interfaces that are natural, intuitive
to use, and even "cool" is now globally recognized as a crucial factor
when creating new interactive products. User Experience (UX) research
and engineering has focused on investigating and designing for
subjective perceptions of feelings and emotions (e.g. fun, trust,
feeling of competency) that users experience before, during or after
interacting with devices and interfaces. This could hence be termed an
interaction-oriented approach, in which UX is addressed during
development activities of a certain product or device. Conversely,
educational psychology established models of the mind, such as the
Cognitive Load (CL) theory, that often get tested on various tasks or
devices in a post hoc fashion.
Teachings from both fields are complementary and crucial to the design
of interactions, interfaces and effective content. However, to date
there is little known about the dependencies that exist between UX and CL.

Participants:
This one-day workshop provides a unique opportunity to bring together
researchers and practitioners with a diverse background to (1) share
practical experience and theoretical knowledge (2) to discuss possible
impacts and dependencies between UX and CL, (3) to discuss objective
measurement techniques and study designs to investigate their
relationship, and (4) to build a first theoretical framework including
principles to describe the constructs' dependencies.

Submissions:
The workshop is open to researchers and practitioners with experience or
interest in dependencies between UX and CL. Participants will be
selected based upon the relevance for the workshop topics,
insightfulness, and originality of their submissions that are expected
in the form of position papers (Springer LNCS, max 4 pages).
Submissions can be made via Email to [log in to unmask]

Topics:
  - Which UX factors impact CL and in what measure?
  - Which UX factors can get influenced by CL, and to what extent?
  - What theoretical models can support that dependency?
  - How does this relationship evolve or change over time?
  - How can UX and CL be measured objectively and in real-time?
  - Good examples on combining UX and CL in products

Important Dates:
  - May 20th 2013: Submission of position papers [Extended]
  - May 27th 2013: Acceptance notification
  - June 14th 2013: Submission of Camera Ready
  - September 3rd 2013: Workshop
(all times are 23:59 American Samoa time)

Intended Outcomes:
This workshop provides a unique opportunity to bring together
researchers and practitioners with a diverse background to share
practical experience and theoretical knowledge which will help define
and shape future research activities in UX and CL. Accepted papers will
be published on the workshop website ([log in to unmask]),
alongside with a summary of the workshop results, written as a
whitepaper spread to related communities via workshop website, email and
social networking.

Workshop Organizers:
The workshop organizers are from National ICT Australia (NICTA) and
Fraunhofer Institute for Experimental Software Engineering, Germany
(Fraunhofer IESE), in particular: - Dr. Fang Chen (NICTA)
  - Ronnie Taib (NICTA)
  - Kun Yu (NICTA)
  - Steffen Hess (Fraunhofer IESE)
  - Jessica Jung (Fraunhofer IESE)

More Information:
More and continuously updated information can be found at
