*The Web Science Education Worskhop: Sharing experiences and developing 

2009 in Athens, 2010 in Southampton, 2011 in Koblenz, 2012 in Evanston 
and 2013 in Paris: Web Science curriculum and education workshops have 
become a regular gathering point for all members of the Web Science 
community involved in organizing courses and programs on Web education 
in their institutions. From the fundamentals of the Web Science 
Curriculum to the experiences of “Teaching the Web”, these workshops 
have been well-attended, valuable and valued occasions to share 
practical experiences, discuss innovative ideas on interdisciplinary 
teaching and exchange opinions on contents and practices.

Over the past 6 years, Web Science education has evolved from Doctoral 
schools to undergraduate programs and for the first time in 2013, 
Massive Online Open Courses were launched at the Universities of 
Southampton and Koblenz. Web Science is now integrated into 
interdisciplinary education programs, working across disciplines 
including economics, sociology, social policy, statistics, psychology, 
geography, education, mathematics, politics and of course computer 
science. Programs are available on the five continents, in several 

Marking important recognition of this trajectory, in 2013, the Web 
Science Trust Network of Laboratories created a new Web Science 
Education Task Force. This group of WSNet members works as a steering 
committee to organize and promote activities within the Web Science 
education community.

/This year’s workshop has the following objectives:/

-To bring together researchers and members of the Web Science community 
involved in Web Science education: teachers, tutors, program 
coordinators, content designers and students, to have them present their 
programs, their courses, their teaching material and their experience 
with Web Science education.

-The creation and design of a collaborative platform to manage 
information, resources, teacher’s training, exchange of students or 
teachers, events, etc.


*The Call for Presentations*

The Web Science Education Workshop’s call for presentation is divided in 
_2 topics_:*

Topic #1 : Web Science Education activities / Students feedback
The second hour of the workshop will be dedicated to oral presentations 
of 5 minutes each by participants involved in Web Science program 
design, teaching activities, teaching content production and students 

Participants who would want to present their activities or experiences 
should produce a 2 pages proposal for one of the following items:/

1. Web science teaching experiences/

Web Scientists with “Web related” teaching activities (courses, 
seminars, etc.) are invited to present their experiences in this workshop./

     Submissions should detail:/

  * Course context (level, students, discipline, etc.)
  * Course objectives and targeted competencies
  * Course content (Structure, sections, topics, references)
  * Evaluation methods (Tests, projects, papers, etc.)

/2. Web Science education programmes design/

     Participants involved in Web Science education programmes are 
invited to present:

  * Their experience with WS curriculum construction and usage
  * Strategies for attracting students
  * Experiences of dealing with institutions also in relation to how we
    get these cross-disciplinary cross-faculty programmes to work in
    University structures that are often very siloed.

/3. Student feedback/

     Web Science students can share their experience in short 

Topic #2 : Web Science Education community building and tools*

Participants are invited to present position papers (2 pages) on 
suggestions to build the Web Science Education community online and 
Accepted position papers will be presented in 5 minutes during the third 
hour of the workshop.

  * Curriculum development
  * Online tools for content delivery / Collaborative platforms
  * E-Learning / MOOCs
  * Teachers and students shared activities
  * International exchanges of teachers or students
  * Outreach Programmes
