Call for Papers
Special Issue on Persuasive Interactive Systems
International Journal of Human-Computer Interaction (
http://www.tandfonline.com/loi/hihc )
Special Issue Editors:
Luca Chittaro (HCI Lab, University of Udine, Italy)
Luciano Gamberini (HTLab, University of Padova, Italy)
Anna Spagnolli (HTLab, University of Padova, Italy)
Persuasive Technology (PT) is a vibrant interdisciplinary research field
that focuses on the design and development of technologies aimed at
changing users' attitudes or behaviors through persuasion and social
influence, but not through coercion or deception. Interactive systems
are increasingly used for persuasive purposes in a growing number of
domains, ranging from personal health and safety to corporate and
governmental campaigns. HCI researchers and practitioners working on
such systems must focus not only on the more traditional usability,
accessibility and user experience (UX) dimensions but explicitly address
persuasiveness in the design as well as evaluation phases. This special
issue aims to bridge the HCI and PT research communities, revealing new
insights that the study, creation, evaluation and deployment of
interactive persuasive systems have to offer. A major goal of the
special issue is to illustrate and explore how the design and evaluation
of persuasive interactive systems can be informed by theories in
persuasion proposed in different areas of psychology. We must also
consider that psychological theories of persuasion do not typically deal
with interactive systems but consider instead the interpersonal
persuasion context or traditional media such as printed materials, radio
and television. Therefore, another important goal for the special issue
is to highlight how HCI can adapt, augment and extend such theories to
take into account the peculiar features of interactive systems.
We solicit papers that address the above described goals, and welcome
any relevant submission on the three following themes:
● Persuasive systems based on novel interaction techniques (e.g., games,
embodiment, augmented reality, information visualization and
perceptualization, natural and tangible user interfaces,...)
● Methodologies for the design and evaluation of persuasive interactive
systems
● Interactive persuasive applications of proven effectiveness in domains
of societal relevance
Submitted papers must present novel and rigorous research findings and
must be robustly grounded in theories of persuasion. Papers that do not
meet both requirements will not be considered for the special issue and
authors will not receive detailed reviews of such submissions.
SUBMISSION PROCESS
Authors should first submit a PAPER PROPOSAL to the special issue editors.
Proposals must be written by strictly following the template provided at
http://hcilab.uniud.it/IJHCIpersuasive.rtf
and must be submitted in PDF format to [log in to unmask]
NO LATER THAN JUNE 30.
Proposals will be evaluated for relevance to the special issue themes
and goals. Authors of well-written proposals that have a good match with
the special issue themes and goals will be invited by the editors to
submit a FULL PAPER for consideration in the special issue. Note that
receiving an invitation to submit a full paper from the editors does not
imply acceptance of the full paper. Each full paper will be reviewed by
an international committee of experts, and the final decision will be
based on a careful evaluation of reviewers' assessments.
