1 or more fully-funded PhD positions in interactive and adaptive, robotic environments at Cornell University, deadline December 1.

The Architectural Robotics Lab at Cornell University, led by Keith Evan Green, invites candidates to apply for PhD positions with a start date of August 22, 2017. One PhD position is funded under the U.S. NSF award, home+, An Intelligent and Interoperable Suite of Robotic Furnishings, Learning and Evolving with Their Users. The home+ project aims to iteratively design, prototype, and test robotic home furnishings that collectively allow individuals with impaired mobility and/or cognitive functioning to age in place (in their homes) by assisting them in routine domestic activities. Another PhD position in interactive and adaptive, robotic environments focused on other applications and technical challenges may also be funded.

Preferred applicants are individuals interested in pursuing a Ph.D. focused in design research who have earned prior degree(s) in a design discipline, broadly defined, including architecture, industrial design, product design, interaction design, user experience, media arts, HCI, HRI, human factors psychology, and/or human-centered design/computing/engineering. Successful applications will demonstrate a promise for cultivating new vocabularies of design and new, complex realms of understanding towards novel, computational and human-centered design propositions.

ABOUT THE LAB
Cornell’s Architectural Robotics Lab strives to address problems and opportunities of an increasingly digital society by developing and testing meticulous, artfully-designed, "cognitive environments" that act, think, and grow with their inhabitants. The lab develops, specifically, robotic built environments. The novelty of the lab lies in its recognition of the physical, built environment, from furniture to the metropolis, as a next frontier of computing, robotics, and design. Research in the lab is highly collaborative, developed in partnership with faculty and students from departments including Information and Computer Science, Mechanical, Electrical, and Computing Engineering, Materials Science & Engineering, Neuroscience, and Psychology.

APPLICATIONS
Complete applications are due no later than December 1, 2016 without exception. Full funding and living stipend may be offered to one or more qualified Ph.D. applicants for admission to Fall Semester only. The degree of Ph.D. will be awarded in DEA (Design + Environment Analysis) at Cornell University. This academic year, DEA expects to add a new graduate focus in Interactive Environments and Technologies (INTEnT) that would include the activities of the lab. One of the eight Ivy League Universities, Cornell consistently ranks among the top-20 research universities globally, benefits from its beautiful natural surroundings in upstate New York, and adjoins the lively, inclusive downtown of Ithaca.
