CFP Deadline Extension: Call for Doctoral Consortium Applications
CABS 2014 - Collaboration Across Boundaries, Kyoto Japan, 20-22 August 2014

Update: Funding has become available to support attendance at the Doctoral Consortium. The DC chairs will contact accepted students to discuss individual circumstances.

Therefore, we are extending the application deadline to 18 July 2014.

The CABS Doctoral Consortium is a forum for Ph.D. students doing research in the area of intercultural collaboration to meet and discuss their work with each other and an international panel of experienced researchers. CABS aims to be a multidisciplinary forum that integrates the socio-cultural and technical perspectives. The Doctoral Consortium will be held on Wednesday 20-August-2014 the day before the CABS 2014 conference begins.

Applicants should be Ph.D. students with an already well-established direction of research relevant to culture, language, and distance in communication, collaboration, and management and who would benefit from attendance at the Doctoral Consortium. We welcome applicants from a broad range of disciplines and approaches, including anthropology, cognitive science, computer science, information science, linguistics, organizational studies, psychology, sociology, and related fields.

Selected participants will be expected to give short, informal presentations of their work during the Consortium, to be followed by extensive group discussion.

Eligibility and Application Process

In contrast to regular conference papers, submissions should address specifically doctoral work! Therefore, the following elements have to be addressed in the papers:

-An overview of your doctoral research that describes your research question, motivation, study plans, (work in progress), and expected contributions. This overview should also include a paragraph that articulates what you hope to get from attending the CABS Doctoral Consortium. This document should be no more than four pages, formatted according to the ACM SIGCHI template and submitted in PDF format. Please use the Extended Abstracts template.
-A one paragraph biographical sketch
-An email letter from your academic advisor/supervisor indicating that they support your application to the colloquium and that they agree that your research is at an appropriate stage for participation.

Submissions should be emailed to: [log in to unmask]
The new deadline is 18 July 2014, but we encourage earlier submission.

Accepted students should prepare:

-An introduction of themselves and the PhD project for the introductory session. Duration: 1 minute maximum.
-A 15-20 minute plenary presentation of the PhD project for discussion about their project and its main issues
-Students are also invited to prepare a poster about their Ph.D. for the CABS 2014 poster session on 22 August, 2014.

All papers will be reviewed after acceptance by at least two senior researchers and one of the accepted doctoral candidates. Additionally, two discussants, members of the doctoral consortium committee, will be appointed to each paper. Discussant comments will be followed by a plenary discussion of the paper. At the end of the consortium there will be a general discussion, including a brainstorming session about current and future research topics in the area.
