|Hypermedia beyond the Desktop |
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
NRHM is a refereed annual journal covering research on practical and
theoretical developments in hypermedia, interactive multimedia and related
technologies. Issues (normally 8-10 papers) review and explore one or two
topical themes from diverse perspectives.
The main theme for NRHM 2003 is Hypermedia beyond the Desktop, encompassing
all aspects of hypermedia on new platforms and in new environments beyond
the traditional desktop computer. We are also continuing the open topic
sub-theme for high quality papers meeting NRHM's scope in general (see
http://www.comp.glam.ac.uk/~NRHM/).
NRHM has recently been acquired by Taylor & Francis (www.tandf.co.uk) and
NRHM 2003 will be the first issue under the new publishers. The issue will
also be the first to appear in both print and digital formats. We are
particularly interested in exploring possibilities for the digital medium,
for example digital video clips illustrating environments, data or
interfaces discussed in the paper. Authors are encouraged to contact the
Editor regarding other proposals for related digital material.
Authors are invited to submit original unpublished papers electronically to
the Guest Editor at the e-mail address below. There is no explicit
restriction on length but authors who wish to submit a long article should
contact the Guest Editor prior to submission. In addition to full papers
we will also consider smaller Technical Notes of max 3500 words -
typically reporting on a technical achievement or implementation in an
early state of research. Open theme submissions should be submitted
electronically to the NRHM Editor at e-mail address below.
Initial submissions for reviewing can be sent in PDF, Postscript, RTF or
HTML following any conventional readable document format.
!! Submission deadline: October 20th, 2003
!!
!! Acceptance notification: December 8th, 2003
!!
!! Final manuscripts due: January 12th, 2004.
Hypermedia beyond the desktop
-----------------------------------------------
Hypermedia has for many years been dealing with purely electronic documents
and structures via traditional WIMP interfaces for desktop computers. The
Hypermedia and Web research communities have provided many achievements for
this traditional platform. But many new types of platforms and environments
are emerging, for which hypermedia concepts also hold much potential. One
example of such a new platform is digital paper or electronic ink
technologies, where we may transfer hypermedia structuring and
functionality to physical paper. Another example is mobile hypermedia on
cell phones, PDAs, and TabletPCs. Here hypermedia applications can take
advantage of the context in term of place, time and the user's profile to
deliver relevant information and to contextualize annotations and links
created by the mobile user. A final example is augmented or mixed reality
environments, where physical material may be integrated in hypermedia
systems by taking advantage of radio-based or visual tagging technologies.
These and other examples of new forms of hypermedia are emerging within the
hypermedia field but the new developments are also taking place in related
fields like augmented reality, pervasive computing, mobile computing, HCI.
With this issue we would like to encourage a cross-fertilization between
hypermedia and relevant fields to explore new forms of hypermedia. We would
like to encourage technical, theoretical and empirical contributions within
the subject area.
The following list of suggested topics illustrates the scope of the issue
but is not intended to be exhaustive:
- Hypermedia in digital paper and electronic ink
- Augmented and mixed reality hypermedia
- Context aware and location-based hypermedia
- Mobile hypermedia
- Ubiquitous and pervasive hypermedia architectures, e.g. peer-to-peer
architectures
- New user interfaces for hypermedia, e.g. tangible, gestural, auditory
interfaces
Please contact the Guest Editor if you have any questions on the scope of
the call or require further information.
