Call for Papers - CHI 2015 Workshop
How WEIRD is HCI? Extending HCI Principles to other Countries and Cultures
http://www.arolis.com/chi_2015_WEIRD_HCI_workshop/
===============================================================

****** Deadline for position papers or questionnaire: January 19, 2015 ******

A large majority of articles published at prominent HCI venues such as CHI and CSCW reports on studies with WEIRD (Western, Educated, Industrialized, Rich, and Democratic) participants, ignoring that the results might not apply to other subject populations.

This workshop aims to have the following two main outcomes: (1) A list of major principles that HCI researchers often build on and that are unlikely to apply to users in other countries and cultures. (2) An action plan that describes how we can extend these previous findings, such as by collaborating across countries and cultures, conducting large-scale online experiments, or creating a culture of replications and extensions with more diverse subject populations.

We invite interested people to either answer a questionnaire<https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1iJd-MM7uhQjBRVb4M4FNEZ62o62Uj8C9ugj0TYXzeaw/viewform> or to write a traditional 4 page position paper, submitted in the CHI extended abstracts format by January 19, 2015. The questionnaire is at http://www.arolis.com/chi_2015_WEIRD_HCI_workshop/. Papers should include (1) the author's prior work in the field of cross-cultural HCI, (2) issues that decrease the external validity of HCI studies and (3) a list of prominent HCI studies that should be discussed during the workshop. Please use the modified template: http://www.arolis.com/chi_2015_WEIRD_HCI_workshop/SIGCHIPositionPaper_template.zip and submit them to [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>.

The questionnaire answers and papers will be peer-reviewed by the organizing committee. Up to 18 participants will be selected according the aim of getting people together with different cultural, working and scientific backgrounds as well as based on the participants' prior experience in the field together with the likelihood for stimulating and contributing to the discussion. Accepted authors must register for the workshop and for one or more days of the conference.
