Pervasive computing crosses many domains, but perhaps none
as complex or important as the home.
Households are spaces full of challenges and opportunities
for technologies and applications. These include setup and
ease of use, multiple occupants with different needs and
expertise, critical privacy and security concerns, and a
wide range of social scenarios and variations in deployments.
The aim of this special issue is to explore technologies and
applications related to all aspects of pervasive computing
pertaining to domestic situations. This includes work that
comes under many synonymous or overlapping fields for pervasive
computing, such as ubiquitous computing, ambient intelligence,
the Internet of Things, and intelligent environments. Relevant
topics for this special issue include, but are not limited to,
- Applications addressing practical domestic problems — for
example, in household routines/management — and also those
addressing emotional or social needs and desires.
- Pervasive computing topics pertain to families or other
domestic units, even for scenarios not rooted in physical
dwellings (for example, mobile, crossing work and home life,
and so on).
- Novel hardware relevant to domestic pervasive computing —
for example, for sensing or actuation.
- Methods of gaining insight into household activities /
occupants — for example, location or context sensing.
- New applications of pervasive computing in domestic
environments, including specific spaces such as the kitchen,
living spaces, bathrooms, and bedrooms.
- Pervasive computing applications related to more complex
households/dwellings, such as shared houses, dormitories,
apartments, mobile dwellings, or even hotels/motels.
- Deployment-based research providing insight into the
performance of specific hardware or applications in
- Toolkits or methodologies related to domestic pervasive
- Experiences with research into domestic computing, leading
to more generalizable insights into pervasive computing in
- Important domestic domains such as healthcare, elder care,
education, physical security, energy efficiency, and so on.
- Communication-related applications such as social networking,
or long-distance relationships, such as for couples or families.
- Security and privacy aspects of domestic pervasive computing.
- Visions for the future of domestic environments and how
technologies will adapt and change.
- Approaches for making technologies adapt to the particular
challenges of the domestic environment—for example, to multiple
stakeholders, to being repurpose-able or appropriate-able,
coping with the differences between homes, and so on.
- Work addressing differences across geographical or cultural
boundaries or social groups.
The guest editors invite original and high-quality submissions
addressing all aspects of this field, as long as the connection
to the focus topic is clear and emphasized. Review or summary
articles — for example critical evaluations of the state of the
art, or an insightful analysis of established and upcoming
technologies — may be accepted if they demonstrate academic
rigor and relevance.

Submissions should be 4,000 to 6,000 words long and should
follow the magazine's guidelines on style and presentation.
All submissions will be single-blind anonymously reviewed in
accordance with normal practice for scientific publications.
