*Abstract*: Ageing has become a significant research area in 
Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) in recent years. This book presents the 
results of a critical review of approximately 20 years worth of HCI 
research on older people and digital technologies. By drawing upon this 
review and HCI research waves (Human Factors, Human Actors and User 
eXperience), this book posits that the central role that (i) age-related 
declines in functional abilities, (ii) intergenerational 
Computer-Mediated Communication, (iii) independent living, and (iv) 
fairly (negative) stereotyped views of older people take on contemporary 
HCI research, has come to a stage where a change of paradigm – in the 
sense introduced by Kuhn in The Structure of Scientific Revolutions 
(1962) – is needed to better understand, design, and evaluate older 
people’s digital experiences in the 21st century. This change of 
paradigm is grounded in the fact that ageing is a multifaceted process, 
the role that digital technologies (can) take on in older people’s lives 
goes beyond health and communication, and the relationship between older 
people and digital technologies is, or might be, richer than one might 
imagine (in a positive or negative way) when witnessing and / or talking 
to them about their digital experiences. This book will examine, from an 
HCI perspective, the relationship between older people and several 
topics which are receiving increasing research attention in HCI and 
Ageing studies, ranging from citizen science, accessibility, big data, 
the making culture and positive computing to technology adoption, 
emotions, leisure, creativity and gender, in an attempt to provide new 
perspectives on HCI research with, and for, older people. The chapters 
of this book will be written by international professionals working in 
academia and in industry. The chapters will be a mix of literature 
reviews, provocative case studies, insightful lessons learned from years 
of experience and the field, and conversations with older people about 
their present-day and envisaged, yet-to-be-designed, future digital 
experiences.

*Submission procedure:*

  * Potential authors will submit expressions of interests that provide
    a succinct summary of the most relevant aspects of their intended
    chapters.
  * Expressions of interests will be peer-reviewed.
  * Authors of accepted expressions of interest will be invited to
    prepare and submit full chapters taking into account the feedback
    provided by the editor.
  * Chapters will be permitted two rounds of peer-review

*Schedule of publication:*

  * Expressions of interest: mid-January 2017
  * First versions of chapters: mid-September 2017
  * Second and final versions of chapters: December 2017
  * Book (tentative): Spring 2018
