                        CALL FOR PAPERS

Technology advancements are constantly increasing the amount and the
complexity of data and information available at clinicians fingertips.
Members of the clinical staff (doctors, technicians, nurses, students,
managers) will not be able to take advantage of these large amounts of
data and will also incur the risk of being overwhelmed by them, if
computer applications do not take adequately into account effective
presentation and interaction with data.
Answers to this problem are a central theme of study and development
in the rapidly growing area of Information Visualization (IV).

This special issue will focus on how IV can be a strategic component
for augmenting the capabilities of intelligent medical systems,
enabling them to:
- visually present medical data in more intuitive, easy to understand,
easy to learn, easy to recognize, easy to navigate, easy to manage
  formats;
- visually magnify subtle aspects of the diagnostic, therapeutic,
patient management, and healing process, which otherwise could be
  difficult to notice;
- prevent information overload and allow members of the clinical staff
to master larger quantities of information.

Suggested topics for submissions include any IV approach (e.g., 2D,
3D, graph/network, interactive, spatial, temporal, multi-dimensional,
workspace,...), provided that its application to medicine is carefully
discussed in the paper. Submissions which do not clearly and convincingly
show their relevance to medicine are strongly discouraged. Authors should
also be aware that they are not writing for a computer graphics journal,
and organize the paper to maximize readability for the intended audience
of Artificial Intelligence in Medicine. Papers which show how to
effectively integrate IV techniques into intelligent medical systems
are especially welcome.
Authors who are unsure if their work adequately fits the scope of the
special issue can contact the guest editor before submitting.

SUBMISSION AND REVIEWING PROCESS

All prospective authors should send a preliminary declaration of
interest via e-mail well before the paper submission deadline,
even if they are not sure that they will be able to submit the paper.
The preliminary declaration of interest is a plain text message,
containing a tentative title and a short abstract, and has to be sent
to the special issue e-mail address ([log in to unmask]).
Preliminary declarations of interest should be sent as soon as possible,
but no later than 11 FEBRUARY 2000.

Full papers will be submitted electronically. The preferred file format
is pdf. In exceptional cases, we might accept Word or Postscript files.
Instructions for electronic submission will be provided in the special
issue web page. Papers must be electronically received
no later than 26 FEBRUARY 2000.

Each paper will be reviewed by at least two members of the
multidisciplinary scientific committee, which includes experts in
the fields of information visualization, artificial intelligence,
human-computer interaction, and computer graphics.

Notifications of acceptance will be sent by 28 APRIL 2000.

Final versions of accepted manuscripts must be received by 30 JUNE 2000.

FORMATTING REQUIREMENTS

Length of submissions must not exceed a maximum of 8000 words.
The authors names, snail mail and e-mail addresses, Fax and telephone
numbers should appear on the front page.
Submissions should include an abstract (100 to 200 words) which should
accurately characterize the contributions of the paper,
and 3 to 5 keywords, which should accurately characterize the topics of
the paper, also to facilitate the assigning of reviewers.
The manuscript should be prepared in accordance with
instructions given in the Guide for Authors, available from the publisher
and from the special issue web page (http://www.dimi.uniud.it/~chittaro/IVM).
