DESCRIPTION
We propose a full-day workshop offering researchers, educators, designers and practitioners the opportunity to reflect upon and discuss the methodological concerns related to the understanding and evaluation of embodied learning experiences for children. The workshop aims at critically exploring methodological and epistemological approaches to researching embodiment in digital environments. Its goals are to extend and develop methods and tools for evaluating, researching and understanding learning in embodied interaction, generate new research questions and map future research and design directions. During the workshop, participants will be invited to reflect on key research challenges in developing appropriate methodological approaches and on the definition of adequate assessment instruments. The workshop will therefore provide participants with methodological and reflexive tools to tackle the assessment of learning experiences based on embodied interaction.

WORKSHOP GOALS
To study current research status in this field.
To discuss new approaches to assess embodied learning experiences.
To give participants the opportunity to explore different methods for the design of Full-Body Interaction.
To discuss the methodological appropriateness of assessment methods in this field.
To build a community of experts around the design of embodied interaction.

DEADLINES AND SUBMISSION FORMAT
We invite potential participants to submit a position paper on the workshop topic. Submissions include:
ACM CHI Extended abstract format
Up to 4 pages long
Description of at least one design and/or evaluation method (current research, practice or future studies)
Explanation of how methods contribute to the design of Embodied Interaction
Position papers should be emailed to Marie-Monique Schaper ([log in to unmask])
Important dates:
Submission position paper: 25 May 2016
Notification: 28 May 2016.

ABOUT THE ORGANIZERS

Laura Malinverni is a designer, artist and researcher in the field of education, art and new technologies. Currently she is a PhD student in the ICT Department of Universitat Pompeu Fabra (Barcelona, Spain). Her current research focuses on using embodied interaction in learning processes and on exploring Participatory Design strategies.

Marie-Monique Schaper is a researcher and UX/UI designer who specializes in merging technology and design research. Working in concept development, game and interaction design, she benefits from her interdisciplinary educational background. Currently, she is PhD candidate and teaching assistant at ICT Department of Universitat Pompeu Fabra focusing her research on new strategies for Participatory Design methods for children, interaction design and embodied cognition.

Narcís Parés is a Tenure Associate Professor in the ICT Department of Universitat Pompeu Fabra (Barcelona, Spain). He has an interest in the possibilities of Full-Body Interaction based on current Embodied Cognition theories in areas such as Learning, Play and Special Needs. This research is undertaken from the standpoint of Interaction Design, Interactive Communication and Interactive Playgrounds, focusing attention mainly on interaction for children and using non-invasive technologies. He is senior member of the Cognitive Media Technologies Group and leader of the Full-Body Interaction Lab.

Christopher Frauenberger is Senior Researcher at Vienna University of Technology and Principle Investigator of “OutsideTheBox- Rethinking Assistive Technologies with Children with Autism” He holds a PhD in Computer Science from Queen Mary, University of London and subsequently worked as Postdoctoral Fellow at Sussex University. In his academic research he focused on exploring interactive technologies in the contexts of people with disabilities. This included designing auditory displays for the visually impaired, investigating non-verbal communication in people with schizophrenia and technologically enhanced learning environments for children with autism. Methodologically he is committed to participatory design approaches and often interprets collaborative techniques from other fields in his work.

Sara Price is a Reader in Technology-enhanced Learning at UCLKL, with interests in the design, development and evaluation of mobile, tangible, sensor technologies for learning, specifically through embodied forms of interaction.

Carey Jewitt a Professor in Education and Technology and an Academic Fellow at UCLKL, with interests in representation and technology mediated learning, with a focus on visual and multimodal theory and research methods.
