Call for Papers for the Special Issue on:
Quality-of-Life Technologies
Special Issue Editors: Katarzyna Wac (University of Copenhagen and University of Geneva), Homero Rivas (Stanford), Maddalena Fiordelli (University of Lugano)
Emerging Internet technologies and computing services have become an indispensable part of our daily life. Now, their usage is becoming less passive and more mobile, interactive, and real time. They help us make informed decisions in many QoL-related areas, including those involving our physical and psychological health, and our social interactions.
However, these services depend on the underlying heterogeneous Internet technologies and computing services. And we don’t yet fully understand how architects’, designers’, and developers’ decisions about these technologies and services affect users’ QoL.
This special issue aims to address this subject. The guest editors solicit technical papers presenting research challenges and results, emerging methodological approaches, and case studies in which an Internet service influences a user’s QoL or in which the user’s QoL needs, expectations, and experiences influence the services.
The editors want papers on novel solutions that address key, emerging challenges related to QoL as a complex ecosystem of devices, users, their expectations and experiences, Internet services, media, and content. Appropriate topics include but are not limited to:
QoL-technology-related user-experience and business models
distributed QoL technologies, infrastructures, frameworks, and architectures, including those for use with mobile technology, the cloud, and big-data analytics
interoperability and standardization
security, privacy, and trust
legal and liability issues
sustainability
ethics
current experiences from labs and the field
QoL applications and services for health, entertainment, education, social networking, and other emerging domains
QoL technologies for specific user needs
Only submissions that describe previously unpublished, original, state-of-the-art research and that are not currently under review by a conference or journal will be considered.
Articles should be understandable by a broad audience of computer-science and -engineering professionals, avoiding a focus on theory, mathematics, jargon, and abstract concepts. There is a strict 6,000-word limit (figures and tables are equivalent to 300 words each) for final manuscripts. All manuscripts are subject to peer review on both technical merit and relevance to Computer's readership. Accepted papers will be professionally edited for content and style.
Authors of accepted papers are encouraged to submit multimedia, such as a 2- to 4-minute podcast, a video, or an audio or audio/video interview of the authors by an expert in the field, which the Computer staff can help facilitate, record, and edit.
Timeline for submissions and reviews:
* Abstracts due: 1 July 2016
* Full paper submission deadline: 1 August 2016
* Publication date: March 2017
