Context and Theme
Software architecture provides the key framework for the earliest design
decisions taken to achieve functional and quality requirements.
Significant progress has been made to support the architecture process
over the last decade. However, current approaches to software
architecting are deficient in effectively capturing and managing design
decisions and rationale underpinning them. More than 20 years ago,
Parnas and Clements, and Potts and Burns emphasized the importance of
Rationale in software design and the challenges involved in documenting
it. Since then, the software engineering community has experimented with
several approaches such as Issue Based Information Systems (IBIS),
Questions, Options, and Criteria, and Design Rationale Language.
However, there is no synthesis of the outcomes of the research and
practice in managing architecture design decisions and rationale.
The aim of this special issue is to provide an authoritative source of
reference on managing architectural design decisions and rationale. The
cross-fertilisation of methods, processes, techniques, and tools from
software architecture and design rationale can also offer opportunities
to minimise the duplication of research efforts in both areas, and, more
importantly, to bridge gaps in our knowledge of how to effectively and
efficiently capture and manage architecture design decisions and
rationale underpinning them. The special issue will cover the novel
research work on and/or practical applications of methods, processes,
techniques, and tools for capturing, managing and representing design
decisions and design rationale to support the software architecture
process.
Papers are solicited to describe basic or applied research on topics
related to design decisions and rationale in software architecture.
Solutions and experience in selected software-intensive systems and/or
application domains are especially welcome. While the potential topics
for submissions are expected to be related to design decisions and
design rationale in software architecture, we also welcome submissions
about methods, techniques, and tools to capture and manage rationale
underpinning other artifacts required for making and implementing better
architecture design decisions.

Submission guidelines
Abstracts should be emailed to the guest editors, followed a week later
by full paper submissions via the online submission system at
http://ees.elsevier.com/jss, with ''SPECIAL ISSUE: Architectural
Decisions'' selected as the Article type.
All manuscripts should be compliant with the journal's submission
guidelines for special issues
(http://www.elsevier.com/wps/find/journaldescription.cws_home/505732/aut
horinstructions) and must not have been published previously or be
currently under consideration for publication in any other journals or
conferences. Significant extensions to substantive papers published in
conferences are also welcome, provided that the editors are made aware
of the previous publications.
