Context and Theme

Software Product Line Engineering (SPLE) has emerged as a viable and
important software development paradigm. Over the years, several
methods, techniques, and tools have been developed to support the
different aspects of SPLE. However, there appears to be dearth of
literature reporting high quality research for evaluating software
product line technologies (e.g., variability management, product
derivation tools). Increasing the availability of empirical evidence
is expected to help researchers to assess current research and to
identify the most promising areas of research. Practitioners can
benefit by making informed decisions for selecting suitable
technologies for their particular software development
activities. Empirical research in SPLE can also highlight the
challenge of extending the methods, so that large scale situations of
product line engineering can be successfully and effectively analyzed.

Conducting empirical research in SPLE is often quite difficult as
companies are typically reluctant to give researchers access to their
product lines' data. Also, many benefits of product lines can be
measured only in longitudinal studies, which are difficult to perform
in most environments. Moreover, the challenges associated with the
involvement of human subjects in empirical research of SPLE need to be
identified and addressed.

The aim of this special issue is to provide a forum to describe both
novel empirical results in product line engineering as well as new
empirical methods, which address the specific constraints of
SPLE. Hence, the special issue will consist of high quality papers
demonstrating the use of different empirical research approaches for
evaluating and/or guiding software product line research and
practice. We specifically seek papers that are primarily focused on
the methodological options, challenges, and strategies for conducting
rigorous and systematic evaluation studies to support the claims about
a particular technology developed to support SPLE.

We particularly seek submissions reporting evaluation studies using
one or more of the following or other research methods:

*	Case Studies
*	Controlled Experiments
*	Systematic Literature Reviews
*	Expert opinion based assessment
*	Large scale surveys to report the state-of-the- practice

*	New Research Methods for Evaluating Product Line Research
