UM 2001
8th International Conference on User Modeling
July 13 to July 17, 2001
AlpenCongressCentrum in Sonthofen, Bavaria, Germany
www.dfki.de/um2001
The field of user modeling (UM) has resulted in significant
amounts of theoretical work, as well as practical experience, in
developing UM-based applications in traditional areas of human-
computer interaction and tutoring systems. Further, it promises
to have an enormous impact on recent developments in areas like
information filtering, e-commerce, adaptive presentation
techniques, and interface agents.
This year's conference will include
- a series of 7 workshops with topics ranging from basic
research areas like machine learning to established applications
like adaptive hypermedia and more futuristic issues like
personalized TV;
- 3 tutorials from acknowledged researchers on intelligent user
interfaces, Web-based education systems, and personalization
in e-commerce;
- a panel with representatives from industry discussing various
aspects of personalization in "real-world" applications;
- 3 invited talks with well-known researchers (and practitioners)
presenting their point of view on privacy (Alfred Kobsa),
recommender systems (Joseph A. Konstan), and eye tracking
(Sandra Marshall);
- two and a half days of technical presentations with papers,
posters, system demonstrations, and a doctoral consortium in
which students can discuss their ideas with experienced
researchers in the field.
