LAST AND FINAL CALL FOR POSITION PAPERS

Of Kittens and Kiddies: Reflections On Participatory Design with Small Animals and Small Humans
Workshop at PDC 2016 (Aarhus, Denmark 16 August 2016)

https://kittensandkids.wordpress.com

Participatory Design strives to broaden the perspective of and increase empathy in design by giving specific and often under represented user groups, such as children or older people, a voice in the design process. The exact nature of the role played by such participants in the design process (e.g. user, informant, codesigner) and how much voice they are actually given has been the subject of a long and heated debate in the participatory design community. The emerging field of Animal Computer Interaction, which seeks to empower animals through user-centered technology, offers an interesting opportunity for a comparative analysis. Indeed, working with animals poses many of the challenges also posed by working with children, due to similarities with regards to cognitive capabilities or attention span at particular developmental stages, and with regards to the designer’s ability to communicate with them.

With this workshop we aim to bring together researchers engaged in the practice of participatory design, either with humans be they young, old or somewhere in between or with animals of any shape and size in order to contrast the challenges they face, the methods they use and the lessons they have learnt so far.  We believe the juxtaposition of animals and children to be controversial but at the same time, and partly because of its controversy, we argue that it provides a unique lens through which we can examine core notions such as those of participant and participation beyond preconceptions surrounding distinctions of species or age. We propose that this juxtaposition will enable researchers to gain a better understanding of participatory design as a practice and research approach, and of the values it brings to the design world.

In order to participate in the workshop please submit a short (2-4 pages) position paper providing an overview of your experience with participatory research and its relevance to the workshop topic.
