MULTIMEDIA ON THE EVE OF THE 21st CENTURY

It is our great pleasure to invite you to Orlando for the Seventh ACM
International Multimedia Conference. The conference continues to be a
unique venue bringing together leading researchers and practitioners
in all areas of multimedia computing and networking. Please visit
www.acm.org/sigmm/MM99/index.html or continue reading for a synopsis
of the conference.

TECHNICAL PROGRAM

The members of the organizing committee have worked hard to produce an
outstanding program. As in past years, the technical program includes
a broad range of the best current research in multimedia technology,
this year segregated into three areas: multimedia processing and
coding; multimedia systems support and delivery; and multimedia tools,
endsystems and applications. The program includes 41 full papers, 19
short papers, and 50 posters. The best paper and best student paper
will be presented in a plenary award session at the conclusion of the
conference.

PANELS

In addition to the strong technical program, we have organized three
panels of leading researchers to discuss the current and future
challenges facing the multimedia community. The subjects of the three
panels are as follows:

- Multimedia Research: the Grand Challenges for the Next Decade
- Video Portals
- Multimedia Access and Retrieval: The State of the Art and Future
  Directions

KEYNOTE ADDRESSES

The conference program includes two timely keynote addresses. First,
David Clark of MIT's Laboratory for Computer Science will describe the
latest work in Internet protocols for large scale multimedia
networking, with a view on how and when wide use of multimedia
applications on the internet will come of age. Second, Chris Stapleton
of Universal Studios will present an inside view of multimedia
technology used in theme park design.

TUTORIALS

Immediately prior to the conference are two days of half and full day
tutorials on a variety of research and practice topics, presented by
experts in the given subject area. The list of tutorials includes:

- MPEG-7

Approach to Creating Innovative Multimedia Environments
