Call for Participation - Come join the discussions around “Designing for the Arab World”.

This one-day workshop will be held as part of the DIS 2017 annual ACM SIGCHI Conference on Designing Interactive Systems, held in Edinburgh, UK, 10-14 June 2017. http://dis2017.org/

  *   Workshop date: 11 June 2017

HCI research is playing an important role in interactive systems design and development worldwide. However, there is a gap between HCI research in the Arab region and the West due to socio-economic and political contextual factors. This workshop will be designed based on the discussions initiated in the CHI’17: SIG Meeting ( https://arabhci.org/chi17-sig-meeting ) to bridge the gap between Western technology designers and Arab technology users, and to identify the bidirectional effect of technology by understanding the social shaping and social impact of these technologies adopted in the Arab context.

This workshop is considered one of the initial steps toward establishing a community of interested researchers in the Arab context to foster the discussion and exchange of ideas surrounding the design of interactive systems for the Arab world. The workshop will result in: the development of a research agenda for designing interactive technologies for the Arab context, and confronting the emerging design challenges in the region.

This workshop invites researchers interested in the Arab context with no restrictions on their background, gender or nationality. Participants are required to submit a 4-page position paper in the SIGCHI Extended Abstracts Format ( http://www.sigchi.org/publications/chipubform ), that describes their previous, current, or future interest, and experiences designing and/or deploying interactive systems in the Arab region. The paper should describe how the authors would contribute to the workshop discussions. The submissions should be sent in PDF format to ( [log in to unmask] ).

Position papers will be reviewed by experts in the field and Arab context, and selected based on the contribution to the workshop themes, quality of presentation, accuracy/validity, and potential to stimulate discussion. Upon acceptance, at least one of the authors must register for the workshop and one or more days of the main conference.
