**** CHI Outside - Call for Participation ****
CHI Outside - Interactive Computing in Outdoor Recreation
A CHI '17 Special Interest Group (SIG) - Denver, CO, USA

SIG homepage: http://umtl.dfki.de/chioutside/
Conference homepage: http://chi2017.acm.org

The CHI Special Interest Group (SIG) on Interactive Computing in
Outdoor Recreation (CHI Outside) will take place on May 8, 2017 from
4:30 to 6:00 pm in Room 301 as part of CHI 2017 in Denver, Colorado,
USA. The meeting targets practitioners and academics interested in the
intersection of outdoor recreation and interactive computing. We
define "outdoor recreation" broadly to include activities such as
hiking, bird watching, ATV riding, cycling, outdoor team sports,
wildlife photography, and any number of other pursuits undertaken
outdoors and/or in nature.

The purpose of this SIG is to identify research questions and
foundational theories related to understanding interactive computing
in outdoor recreation. Topics of interest range from engineering
problems to research methods as they apply in the context of
interactive computing in outdoor recreation. The SIG will focus on
identifying and discussing research questions unique to interactive
computing in outdoor recreation. We hope that the SIG will help build
a community of researchers and practitioners.

We expect attendees to have an interest in interactive computing in
outdoor recreation and we expect a great deal of variation in
attendees’ experience level with both research in interactive
computing in outdoor recreation and in outdoor recreation itself. Some
attendees will have little experience in outdoor recreation, while
other participants will have significant experience in one or more
kinds of outdoor recreation. Similarly, some attendees may have done
significant research, design or development in interactive computing
in outdoor recreation while other attendees may have no such
experience.

More details can be found on the webpage of the SIG:
http://umtl.dfki.de/chioutside/ or http://www.facebook.com/chioutside.

Invited Speakers

- Jonna Häkkilä, University of Lapland
- Kai Kuzmi, Keio University
- Floyd Müller, Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT)

Position Papers

The SIG welcomes brief position papers (1-2 pages in any format) that
describe current or planned work in the area of interactive computing
in outdoor recreation. Topics of interest include but are not limited
to:

- Design and implementation of (ambient) assistive systems
- Social acceptance of technology use in outdoor environments
- Novel navigation systems, tailored for the special needs in outdoor recreation
- Systems that enable disabled or impaired people to pursue outdoor activities
- Design and analysis of gamification components in outdoor recreation
- Wearable computing for outdoor activities

Contributions within the scope of the SIG will be distributed to
attendees during the SIG to foster awareness of ongoing work. Selected
work will also be featured on the SIG Webpages after the meeting.
Contributions should be sent to Professor Michael Jones at
[log in to unmask] before the SIG begins.
