UISTDA2018: ACM IUI2018 Workshop on User Interfaces for Spatial and
Temporal Data Analysis
Tokyo, Japan March 11, 2018

Nowadays, humanity generates and contributes to form large and complex
datasets, going from documents published on media outlets, posts on social
media or location-based information. The generated information tends to be
complex, heterogeneous (texts, images, videos, etc.) and is growing at an
incredible pace, with much of this data having a strong spatial and
temporal focus. This steady increase in the availability of such a volume
of information, forces the need of the development of more effective user
interfaces that would assist users in efficient visualization, analysis and
exploration of the data. This workshop, on User Interfaces for
Spatial-Temporal Data Analysis (UISTDA2018) – to be held in conjunction
with the IUI2018 conference – aims at sharing latest progress and
developments, current challenges and potential applications for exploiting
large amounts of spatial-temporal data. One practical application example
to mention are specialized route navigation and suggestion systems for
pedestrians, cyclists, tourists, or minorities such as elder people,
pregnant, disabled people, etc. To generate route suggestions and explore
potential suggested routes users need effective systems and user
interfaces. Effective data preprocessing and management techniques are also
needed for constructing large scale real-world applications or for
investigating complex interaction patterns in order to detect useful

The main topics of the workshop are that of supporting user interface
research through the practical application of Computer Science theories or
technologies for analyzing and making use of spatial-temporal data,
visualizing spatial-temporal data and providing efficient access to the
large wealth of spatial knowledge, especially from location-based services
including volunteered geographic information (VGI) and social media. In
particular we are interested in constructing effective systems to enable
spatial-temporal data analysis and building real-world applications within
the fields of information retrieval, information extraction, text
analytics, natural language processing, artificial intelligence, machine
learning, image processing, ubiquitous computing, and others. Moreover, we
are also interested in solutions to offer collaborative systems/platforms
for creating such data with the help of multiple users and crowds.
The topics of this workshop are as follows (but are not limited to):
- Spatial and temporal data processing for visualization
- Spatial-temporal data visualization
- User interface design for large scale spatial and temporal data analysis
- Natural language processing for spatial and temporal data analysis
- Image processing for spatial and temporal data analysis
- Designing user interface for real-world applications

- Visualizing long-term processes and entity evolution
- Mining interaction patterns
- Developing interactive systems
- Developing geographic information systems
- Discovering spatial and temporal knowledge
- Evaluation metrics for user interface or applications

We invite two kinds of submissions:
- Full papers (max 8 pages)
- Short papers (max 4 pages)

SIGCHI paper format (available from Use
either the Microsoft Word template or the LaTeX template. All submissions
will undergo a peer-review process to ensure a high standard of quality.
Referees will consider originality, significance, technical soundness,
clarity of exposition, and relevance to the workshop’s topics. The
reviewing process will be double-blind so submissions should be properly
anonymized according to the following guidelines:
- All submissions must be written in English.
- Author’s names and affiliations are not visible anywhere in the paper.
- Acknowledgements should be anonymized or removed during the review
Research papers should be submitted electronically as a single PDF through
the EasyChair conference submission system:

NOTE: A joint workshop proceedings will be published as a CEUR-WS volume.
