>> AIMS <<

eLearning is dramatically changing the way students, employees and 
indeed all members of the general public wishing to learn new 
knowledge, perform learning activities, as well as
the ongoing training and development processes typical of professionals 
and knowledge workers.

The workshop constitutes an informal forum for HCI researchers and 
practitioners to discuss the various topics that are most likely to advance 
the current state of the art in eLearning, to establish or reinforce networks 
of common interests and possibly launch new initiatives in the
area of eLearning. Both long papers and short papers submissions are 
invited, addressing key aspects of current eLearning research and projects.

This workshop, promoted by the VICE project, aims at fostering in-depth 
analyses and discussions on the benefits of approaching the design of 
advanced eLearning environments from an HCI methodological perspective. 
It will provide a forum in which researchers and practitioners in the
eLearning field may combine the theoretical frameworks and empirical 
results obtained in their projects to identify interesting trends and 
research directions for the eLearning area.

>> OBJECTIVES <<

Some main objectives of the workshop will be to:

- Examine what eLearning truly is as a field of inquiry. What should it encompass?
- Determine what good and better eLearning systems are like. How do we measure them?
- Establish key problems and challenges that must be met if we are to make real
  progress in eLearning.
- Identify promising approaches to eLearning that may meet current and future
  challenges for technology enhanced learning experiences.
- Foster the development of a research community in the field of eLearning inquiry.

Participants are selected based on submitted position papers. Possible 
topics include but are not limited to:

* Design of eLearning systems
* Adaptive interfaces for eLearning systems
* Learner models
* WWW eLearning systems
* Usability and Accessibility criteria for eLearning systems
* Usability and pedagogical techniques
* Learner experiences evaluation methods and approaches
* Accessibility of eLearning material
* Virtual reality environments for education
* Hypermedia and multimedia eLearning systems
* Ontologies for eLearning environments

>> ACTIVITIES AND OUTCOMES <<


The workshop will play a major, "prime mover" role in fostering a 
greater sense of an eLearning research community and tracking 
important directions in eLearning research for the coming years.
It will also provide an overview of studies highlighting the multiple 
relationships between technological and educational approaches 
to the design of eLearning environments, from which participants may derive
a deeper understanding of the mutual benefits produced by combining both 
perspectives. Participants will have the chance to enrich their research 
and methodological approaches by capitalizing on interdisciplinary
discussions during the workshop and by building contacts with 
participants holding complementary expertise.
Authors of selected papers will be invited to submit extended versions 
for a Special Issue of the SSCI indexed Journal of Educational Technology & Society 
(ISSN 1436-4522 - http://www.ifets.info/).

>> SUBMISSION <<

The following types of submission are solicited:
- Long paper submissions, describing substantial contributions of novel 
ongoing work. Long papers should be at most 8 pages long.
- Short paper submissions, describing work in progress. Short papers 
should be at most 4 pages long.
- Submissions for both type of papers should be in PDF and should be 
formatted according to LNCS (Lecture Notes in Computer Science) format 
(templates can be found at Springer-Verlag LNCS Author and Volume Editor
Instructions).
