                          Call for Participation

The HCC'02 symposia (formerly the IEEE Visual Language Symposium) are
the premier international conferences on visual and multimedia
languages for creating/understanding software.

We hope you will plan to join us at this year's conferences, which
consist of three symposia, include keynote talks by Ben Bederson,
Clayton Lewis, and Randy Pausch, two tutorials, a social program, and
more. Here are some of the details:

Symposium --- Visual/Multimedia Programming and Software Engineering
Program Chairs: Gregor Engels and Martin Erwig
       http://www2.cs.fau.de/HCC02/vmpse.html

Symposium --- Empirical Studies of Programmers
Program Chairs: Susan Wiedenbeck and Marian Petre
       http://www2.cs.fau.de/HCC02/esp.html

Symposium --- End-User and Domain-Specific Programming
Program Chairs: Philip Cox and Trevor Smedley
       http://www2.cs.fau.de/HCC02/eup.html

Keynote --- Ben Bederson
       http://www2.cs.fau.de/HCC02/BenBederson.html

Ben Bederson is a Professor of Computer Science at the University
of Maryland where he is the director of the Human-Computer
Interaction Lab (HCIL) working in Information Visualization, user
interface interaction techniques, and groupware. He is well known
in the field of Human-Computer Interaction, e.g., for his work on
Zoomable User interfaces (Pad++ and then Jazz).

Keynote --- Clayton Lewis
       http://www2.cs.fau.de/HCC02/ClaytonLewis.html

Clayton Lewis is a Professor of Computer Science, Human-Computer
Interaction, at the University of Colorado at Boulder. His main
interests are in the design of user interfaces that will enable
people to learn computer systems quickly and use them effectively,
efficiently, and comfortably. The interface issues he addresses
are primarily cognitive, that is, having to do with mental
activities such as perception, memory, learning, and problem
solving. Moreover he is also interested in computer supported
negotiation and computer modeling in elementary science.

Keynote --- Randy Pausch
       http://www2.cs.fau.de/HCC02/RandyPausch.html

Randy Pausch is a Professor of Computer Science, Human-Computer
Interaction, and Design at Carnegie Mellon, where he is a founding
co-director of CMU's Entertainment Technology Center (ETC). He was
a National Science Foundation Presidential Young Investigator and
a Lilly Foundation Teaching Fellow. He has consulted with Walt
Disney Imagineering on the user interface design and testing of
interactive theme park attractions, particularly for the
"DisneyQuest" virtual-reality based theme park. He has consulted
with Google and sits on the Board of Directors of Jupiter Media
Metrix. Dr. Pausch is the author or co-author of five books and
over 50 reviewed journal and conference proceedings articles, but
his mother is most proud that he was asked to write the "Virtual
Reality" article for the World Book Encyclopedia.

Tutorial --- Visual Languages for Computer-Based Communication
by Steven L. Tanimoto (University of Washington)
       http://www2.cs.fau.de/HCC02/T-Tanimoto.html

Tutorial --- Design for Usability with Cognitive Dimensions
by Alan Blackwell (University of Cambridge)
       http://www2.cs.fau.de/HCC02/T-Blackwell.html

Our social program this year includes a Welcome Reception and an
exciting Conference Banquet which will tentatively be on a "cruise"
along the Potomac with buffet dinner and dance music for those who
want it. And last, but not least, Arlington (VA) is located in the
Washington DC area which offers an abundance of cultural life, area
attractions and so on...

Please join us! More information, including the advance program and
registration details, is available at:
