Subject: CfP: Using Ambient Technology to Support the Social Creative
Process
Call for Web Forum Discussion and Workshop Position Papers
"Using Ambient Technology to Support the Social Creative Process"
A Workshop at the Second European Symposium on Ambient Intelligence
http://www.cs.bath.ac.uk/~cspaw/EUSAIWorkshop.html
8 November 2004
Technical University of Eindhoven, the Netherlands
Many researchers refer to activities such as design as creative
processes,
yet provide little definition of what they mean by creativity or how
people
go about being creative. Our research has led us to viewing such
activities
as social creative processes, involving communication and creative
insight
amongst a group of participants. During this workshop we intend to
develop
an operational definition of what it is to be creative and explore how
ambient technologies can support the social creative process.
Ambient technologies are increasingly being proposed to develop
environments
to support the creative process, such as in participatory design.
However,
participatory design practice in general and these environments in
particular tend to be founded not on theory but on practical experience.
Whilst there is a great deal of value in practical experience, we
propose
developing a theory of creativity as a basis for understanding and
supporting the social creative process of design. With such a
theoretical
basis, we can begin to explain, predict and empirically test how ambient
technologies may best support creative processes.
Key issues that we wish to explore in this workshop include:
* What is creativity?
* What is the process of being creative?
* Can ambient technologies support this creative process?
* How can ambient technologies support this creative process?
* What advantages and disadvantages exist in using ambient technologies
over
others available?
* Can our knowledge of creativity enhance the use of ambient
technologies?
* Can ambient technologies give us a better understanding of creativity?
Web Forum and Position Paper Submission
The Web Forum is now available at the workshop website:
http://www.cs.bath.ac.uk/~cspaw/EUSAIWorkshop.html. You are encouraged
to
contribute to the Forum from today. We hope that this will lead to a
lively
discussion around the above issues and others you may like to raise.
In addition to the Web Forum, you are encouraged to attend the workshop
itself. To do this, please submit a 2 to 4 page position paper
reflecting
the issues raised around using ambient technology to support the social
creative process. Please format your position paper using the ACM
SIGCHI
Conference Template (http://www.chi2004.org/res/CHI04PubsFormat.doc) and
submit it to the Workshop Committee ([log in to unmask]), details on
the
workshop website.
To encourage the widest participation and the liveliest discussion, the
Web
Forum and Position Paper submission are independent ways in which you
can
participate - you can do one without the other if you wish. But we hope
that you will begin contributing your ideas via the Web Forum and then
come
to join us in Eindhoven in November to carry on the discussions. We
anticipate a Special Issue of a journal resulting from the process and
hope
that there will be other useful outputs.
Workshop position papers should be received by 27 August 2004.
Participants
will be notified of acceptance by 3 September 2004.
For any enquiries, see the workshop website or email the workshop
committee - Andy Warr, Eamonn O'Neill, Hilary Johnson -
