for
Springer's Smart Learning Environments journal

To consider how to make learning smart, some of the questions one needs to ask are as follows:
* How to make environment smart – Internet of Things (IoT) is becoming an important driver for creating context aware learning environments.
* How to make content smart - multiple representations and multi modalities are key factors.
* How to make learning process smart - dynamic learning paths, personalized learning, learning activities with smart contracts are important.
* How to make pedagogy/strategy smart – educational big data, learning analytics play important role.
* How to make teacher smart – smart technology are needed for supporting teacher’s professional training and practices.
* How to make student smart - smart technology are needed for supporting student’s self-regulated learning.

The topics for this special theme section are varied, and include but are not limited to:
* Technology induced pedagogical innovations
* Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL): Current considerations and innovations
* Learning Analytics
* Re-engineering education for the 21st century
* Technology: The problems and the solutions
* Technology within K-12 Teaching
* Technology within Post-Secondary Teaching
* Technology for special needs students
