We welcome and encourage contributions to the 18th ACM Interaction Design and Children (IDC) Conference June 12-15 2019.
IDC is the premiere international conference for researchers, educators and practitioners to share the latest research findings, innovative methodologies and new technologies in the areas of inclusive child-centered design, learning and interaction. The annual conference incorporates papers, presentations, speakers, workshops, participatory design experiences and discussions on how to create better interactive experiences for children.
The theme for ACM IDC 2019 is “Live Healthy: Design ⋅ Create ⋅ Explore”. Technologies can support children and adults and help them support their best version of being healthy. While all submissions related to Interaction Design and Children (IDC) are welcome to the conference (see the list of tracks and general topics below), the theme for the conference is active and generative. Help children live (their version of) healthy accompanied with active verbs that can be used to characterize the IDC community that also relate to living healthy: design, create, and explore.
Full papers published at IDC 2019 are ACM archival publications and will be made available through the ACM in the Digital Library (http://dl.acm.org<http://dl.acm.org/>). Other submission categories at IDC 2019 that will be included in the ACM Digital Library are, Work-in-Progress, Doctoral Consortium, Demos, and Workshop Proposals. All represent significant contributions to the field of HCI and interaction design for children. All of the IDC proceedings are in a public version of the Digital Library for one month starting on the first day of the conference. If downloaded within this time period, papers are accessible to the user for one year.
IDC 2019 will be held in Boise, ID, USA. Boise is an urban city on the edge of the outdoors, it is a health-conscious area that features several physical activities, whether it be walking or biking along the Boise river on the 25-mile continuous path (the “Greenbelt”), hiking or camping (or skiing/snowboarding in the winter) in the mountains, rafting or floating down the rivers, or any number of outdoor and indoor activities − people enjoy being active.
IDC TRACKS AND GENERAL TOPICS
IDC 2019 welcomes submissions in the form of full papers, short papers (notes), demonstrations & art installations, workshops, courses, and works-in-progress (late breaking work). There is also a call for participants to submit to the doctoral consortium and the research and design competition.
Submissions to all tracks are invited on the following topics:
Help children live healthy and design, create, and explore
Innovative interactive technologies for children
Theoretically motivated arguments regarding interaction design and children
Empirical studies concerned with the interaction of children and technology
Methods and techniques supporting interaction design and children
Studies of the effects of technology on children’s lives and development
Reflective analyses on the field of child computer interaction and interaction design
Constructive design research for and with children
Studies discussing the involvement of children in the design process
Future vision articles, discussing trends and directions for the field

SPECIAL NOTE ON ETHICS AND CHILDREN
Designing with and for children comes with challenges and responsibilities. The IDC community is keen to include children voices as well as to protect their rights and promote the ethical inclusion of their perspectives in research. Papers must include a section “Selection and Participation of Children” in which the authors of the paper should describe how children were selected (if there were no children simply write – no children participated in this work), what consent processes were followed (i.e. did they consent and if so what they were told), how they were treated, how data sharing was communicated, and especially any additional ethical considerations. This subsection should not exceed 125 words and will not count towards the page limit. NOTE: even if this detail is elsewhere in the paper we still want to see this paragraph.
