Call for Nominations: SIGMETRICS Achievement Award

The 2009 ACM SIGMETRICS Achievement Award will be presented at the
SIG/Performance 2009 conference, June 15-19, 2009, in Seattle,
Washington. The award is given annually to an individual who has made
seminal, high-impact contributions to the computer performance field.
They may be deep insights or creative new designs leading to performance
enhancements in existing or proposed systems. They may be in methodology
and take the form of advances in mathematical modeling, or exceptional
tools for experimental and empirical studies. The common thread of
performance embraces architectures that range from stand-alone computers
to large-scale computer networks; technologies that range from computers
at nano-scale to supercomputer mainframes; and paradigms that extend
well beyond the classical von Neumann machine, e.g., the distributed
paradigms of networks, and the emerging paradigms of molecular, quantum,
and swarm computing.

The award includes a plaque, a $2000 honorarium, as well as expenses for
travel to the conference where the award is presented. The recipient is
also invited to give a technical talk at the conference.

The SIGMETRICS Achievement Award recipient is selected by an Awards
Committee consisting of five individuals appointed by the SIGMETRICS
Executive Committee. The membership of the Awards Committee for 2009
is: Ed Coffman (Chair), Erol Gelenbe, Steve Lavenberg, Dick Muntz, and
Don Towsley.

The nomination rules disallow self-nominations, and require that the
nominator be a member of SIGMETRICS. Nominees, however, need not be
members of SIGMETRICS. Current members of the SIGMETRICS Executive and
Achievement-Award Committees are ineligible, as are SIGMETRICS chairs
within 3 years of the expirations of their terms.

The nomination should include:

  - A two-page description of just those accomplishments which qualify the
nominee as a candidate for the award.

  - A curriculum vitae of the nominee.

  - Five endorsements, of at most 300 words each, from other scientists
in the field supporting the nomination. At least three of the five
    endorsers must be SIGMETRICS members.

  - A concise statement of the nominee’s achievements to be inscribed
    on the award plaque.

The nomination materials must be emailed by March 15, 2009 to the
committee chair: <[log in to unmask]>.

Nominations that do not result in an award can be resubmitted.
