Dear CHI98 attendees,
Policy issues are playing an increasing role in the development of
universal service, intellectual property, educational technology, and
electronic commerce. These are the key themes for the ACM Policy98
conference (see below), which has already attracted a
remarkable set of influential speakers and attendees. These themes will
also be the basis for our discussion at a CHI98 Special Interest Group:
Wednesday April 22, 1998 8:30am - 10:00am
(check your program for location)
We will discuss what role SIGCHI members can play in national policy issues
in the United States and elsewhere, in international issues such as
copyrights and patent protection, and in guiding the future of the
internet and graphical user interfaces. As a community we can help shape
appropriate policies for protecting privacy, controlling pornography,
preventing email abuses, and ensuring appropriate levels of government
regulation.
Please join me, Ben Shneiderman (Co-Chair of ACM Policy98), and your
colleagues in discussing these issues and SIGCHI's role.
