Three Funded PhD Positions in HCI, IR, NLP at Boise State University

# Short summary:
Applications are invited for three funded positions in the PhD in Computing Program at Boise State University to start in August 2018. These PhD students will work on a special research project to improve children’s online search abilities and experience. 

# Application priority closing date: 
July 21 (but sooner is better)

# Job details:
This project  brings together Human-Computer Interaction, Information Retrieval, Natural Language Processing, and Education to help emergent web searchers (i.e., ages 6-11) find the online content they need, while helping them learn how to search. 

# Location:
The positions will be located in the Department of Computer Science at Boise State University in Boise, Idaho, U.S.A. The successful candidates will work together and with project advisors in a growing department within a unique PhD in Computing Program. The project is managed and advised by Dr. Jerry Fails (HCI), Dr. Sole Pera (IR), and Dr. Casey Kennington (NLP) (http://coen.boisestate.edu/faculty-staff2/ <http://coen.boisestate.edu/faculty-staff2/>).

# Dates: 
These are 4-year positions beginning in Fall 2018. Each year student’s progress is evaluated for continuation of funding.

# Compensation:
Tuition remission, insurance, and a living stipend ($26K)

# Key duties and responsibilities:
Work with the research group to develop and evaluate children’s online search tools. Take part in participatory design studies and data collections where children take an active role in the design of the tools.  Perform data analysis, build and evaluate prototypes, integrate systems components together, and deploy for public use. Write reports and papers for publication, maintain code repositories. 

# We are looking for:
* Bachelor's or Master’s in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, or a related field
* Research or practical experience in HCI, IR, NLP, and/or related fields
* Excellent programming skills (HTML5, CSS, Python, R, Java, Javascript, databases)
* High level of proficiency in English both spoken and written
* Strong commitment and ability to work independently and collaboratively in a group
