About WellComp 2018

With the advancements in ubiquitous computing, ubicomp technology has
deeply spread into our daily lives, including office work, home and
house-keeping, health management, transportation, or even urban living
environments. Furthermore, beyond the initial metric of computing, such as
“efficiency” and “productivity”, the benefits that people (users) benefit
on a well-being perspective based on such ubiquitous technology has been
greatly paid attention in the recent years. In our first “WellComp”
(Computing for Well-being) workshop, we intensively discuss about the
contribution of ubiquitous computing towards users’ well-being that covers
both physical, mental, and social wellness (and their combinations), from
the viewpoints of various different layers of computing. WellComp 2018 will
bring together researchers and practitioners from the academia and industry
to explore versatile topics related to wellbeing and ubiquitous computing.

In this workshop, we will bring together people from industry and academia
who are active in the areas of activity recognition, mental health, social
good, context-awareness and ubiquitous computing. The main objective of
WellComp 2018 is to share the latest research in various areas in
computing, related to users’ physical, mental, and social well- being.
Expected areas and topics include, but not limited to, systems research,
user studies, networking, social computing, as listed below.

• Definition and representation of well-being in computing

• Predictive modeling of well-being metric and computational models

• Systems with well-being- awareness

• Measurement of well-being with ubicomp technologies

• Management of physical wellness and well-being

• Management of mental health and well-being

• Management of social good and well-being

• Innovative well-being applications

• Behavior design / feed-back design for well-being application

• Computing and well-being of children, disabilities, or elderly people

• People’s well-being in various situations (e.g., smart home, smart cities
and connected communities, classes)

• People’s well-being and new types of community driven by ICT (e.g.,
sharing economy)

*“HCI for Wellbeing: Technologies for health, mental health and wellbeing”*

*Abstract: *Government and commercial investment in health technology is
substantial and on the rise reflecting opportunities for technologies to
promote uniquely tailored, data-rich and autonomy-supportive tools at
scale. Still many digital technologies for health and wellbeing go
un-evaluated, lack an evidence base, or fall short of achieving the impact
intended. Among the challenges to success is achieving the deep
interdisciplinary involved, which often requires continuous collaboration
among medical professionals, psychologists, HCI researchers, user
experience designers, software developers and end-users. While some
projects lack theoretical grounding or an evidence-base, others fail to
involve users effectively in order to understand their needs, perceptions
and contexts, resulting in technologies that go unused.

Working together, researchers in HCI, health and the social sciences can
improve the processes by which digital technologies are developed and
distributed for the benefit of population-wide health and wellbeing. In
this presentation, I will share some of the multidisciplinary
evidence-based approaches to the development of health technologies taken
at the Wellbeing Technologies Lab in Sydney, Australia. I will describe
some ideas on the contributions HCI can make to this field, and share a
number of case studies in the domains of chronic illness, sleep, mental
health and doctor-patient communication.

*Bio*: Rafael Calvo is an ARC Future Fellow, Professor of Software
Engineering and Director of the Wellbeing Technologies Lab at the
University of Sydney. He is the recipient of five teaching awards, and has
published four books and over 200 articles in the fields of HCI, affective
computing, learning technologies and computational intelligence. His books
include the Oxford Handbook of Affective Computing and Positive Computing:
Technology for Wellbeing and Human Potential (MIT Press). He is Associate
Editor of the Journal of Medical Internet Research – Human Factors
(JMIR-HF) and is co-editing the forthcoming IEEE Transactions on Technology
and Society. He is also former Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on
Learning Technologies and IEEE Transactions on Affective Computing. He has
a PhD in Artificial Intelligence applied to automatic document
classification and has also worked at Carnegie Mellon University,
Universidad Nacional de Rosario, and as a consultant for projects
worldwide. A keen player in the push for more ethical technology design,
Rafael is a member of the IEEE Global Initiative on Ethics of Autonomous
and Intelligent Systems, a part of the UN’s AI for Good Global Summit, and
in 2019 will be a visiting fellow at the Leverhulme Centre for the Future
of Intelligence, University of Cambridge.
